WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senior forward
Gus Wise (Winchester, Va./John Handley) and sophomore forwards
Robert DiSibio (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) and
Jack d'Entremont (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) combined for 65 points, but the Washington and Lee men's basketball team lost to 12th-ranked Christopher Newport, 103-91, on Monday at the D.C. Showcase hosted by Catholic.
The Generals (3-5) trailed by just four points (44-40) at halftime, and cut the lead to just two points (49-47), following a layup by junior guard
Richie Manigault (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) with 17:35 left in the second half. Over the next three and a half minutes of game action, the Captains (10-2) went on a 10-2 run to extend their advantage to 10, 59-49, with 14:02 on the clock.
The Blue and White answered with a 7-2 spurt, highlighted by five points from d'Entremont, to pull to within five (61-56) with 12:33 to go in the contest. The margin was six, 68-62, with 10:35 left in the game, but a jumper by CNU senior guard Adrian Beasley and triple by first-year guard Ty Henderson over the next two minutes stretched the lead to 11 (73-62).
The Captains' offense continued to efficiently score the rest of the half, as the Generals could not pull any closer than eight points the rest of the way.
W&L shot 53.2 percent (33-of-62) from the floor and 52.0 percent (13-of-25) from beyond the arc, but Christopher Newport made 38-of-69 (55.1 percent) from the field, 9-of-26 (34.6 percent) from long range and 18-of-22 (81.8 percent) from the foul line.
DiSibio led the way for the Generals with a game-high 24 points to go with six rebounds. Wise tallied a career-high 21 points on 8-of-13 from the floor and 5-of-9 from downtown, and d'Entremont added 20 points, six rebounds and two steals.
CNU had five players in double figures with sophomore forward Jahn Hines, senior guard Darian Peterson and Henderson each tallying 18 points.
The Generals next compete on December 29 when they host Sewanee on the first day of the W&L Holiday Tournament at 2:00 pm.
