Achter's 19 points lead W&L past Shenandoah, 59-48

WINCHESTER, Va. – First-year forward Lauren Achter (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) tallied 19 points to lead the Washington and Lee women's basketball team to a 59-48 road win over Shenandoah on Wednesday.

With the win, the Generals improve to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the ODAC, and they have now won three straight games. Additionally, it is the 123rd win in the tenure for head coach Christine Clancy, which ties the program record held by Mandy King. The Hornets fall to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in conference with the loss.

The Generals trailed by six points late in the first quarter at 13-7, but a 10-4 run into the early second quarter pulled the team back even. The Hornets then scored five points on a pair of jumpers, but a three from junior guard Ana Dorta (Katonah, N.Y./John Jay) ignited a 12-4 run that put W&L ahead by a 29-24 margin with 2:22 left in the half.

Achter and senior guard Kate Groninger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) highlighted the first half for the Generals. Groninger scored nine points, including six during the 12-4 second-quarter run, and she made each of her first three triples. Achter added eight points in the first half on 3-of-5 shooting and 2-for-3 from distance.

Leading by a point at the half, W&L began to pull away with a 16-8 score in the third quarter, which included 12 straight points to start the period. The Hornets mustered up a 10-5 run in the fourth quarter to pull back to within six points with two and a half minutes left, but W&L held Shenandoah without a field goal from that point on to seal the win.

Achter scored 11 of her 19 points in the second half, and she finished the game shooting 7-of-12 from the floor and 3-for-6 on three-point shots. Achter added four rebounds one block and one steal. Senior guard Megan Horn (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School) tallied nine points, eight boards and three assists and senior guard Jordan Diehl (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) pulled down 13 rebounds to go along with six points.

Shenandoah senior forward Olivia Weinel scored a team-high 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting overall, senior guard Sierra St. Cyr totaled six points and 10 rebounds and senior forward Ragan Johnson recorded eight points and nine boards.

W&L held big advantages over Shenandoah in three-pointers made (9-2) and free throws made (10-2), while limiting the Hornets to just 2-of-16 on their three-point shots. In total, W&L shot 36.4 percent (20-55) from the floor to 35.5 percent (22-62) for the Hornets.
