GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team produced nine placewinners en route to a second-place finish out of 10 teams at the Messiah Invitational on Saturday.
 
Wisconsin-Eau Claire claimed the team title with 151.5 points, followed by the Generals in second place with 127.5 points.  The host Falcons were third with 112.5 points, Liberty was fourth with 106.5 points and Ursinus rounded out the Top 5 with 104.0 points.
 
Individually, the Generals were led by senior 141-pounder Charlie Cunningham (Pequannock, N.J. / Seton Hall Prep) and junior 157-pounder Ryan Luth (Milford, Conn. / Joseph A. Foran), who both placed second in their respective weight classes.  Cunningham logged one tech fall and two major decisions in his first three matches to advance to the title match, where he fell to Josiah Gahr of Messiah by a score of 6-1.  Luth registered a pin in his opener and a major decision in his second match.  He then posted a 5-0 win in the semifinals, but dropped a 9-6 decision to Messiah's Nick Barnhart in the title bout.
 
Senior 165-pounder Joe Salerno (Princeton Junction, N.J. / West Windsor-Plainsboro South), senior 184-pounder Brad Basham (Burlington, Mass. / Buckingham Browne & Nichols) and junior 125-pounder Riley Parker (Virginia Beach, Va. / First Colonial) all placed third in their respective weight classes.  Salerno dropped his opening match and then won five straight, including four by fall.  He completed his day with a pin of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Tristan Massie in just 57 seconds during the third-place match. Basham claimed each of his first three matches but suffered a 6-2 loss in the semifinals.  He recovered and defeated Niall Schoenfelder of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the third-place match, 8-5.  Parker won his first two matches, before falling in the semifinals, 14-4.  He then logged a major decision win and defeated Brent Lorin of Johns Hopkins by a score of 7-3 in the third-place match.
 
Junior Matt Majoy (Syosset, N.Y. / Syosset) went 4-2 overall in finishing fourth overall in the 197-pound weight class and junior Cameron Blizard (Greensboro, N.C. / Ragsdale) posted a 3-2 record in finishing fifth in the 174-pound weight class.  Senior Clay Chadwick (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown) also went 4-2 in placing fifth at 285 pounds.
 
First-year David Rubin (Matawan, N.J. / Matawan Regional) went 4-2 and placed sixth at 125 pounds.
 
Washington and Lee will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Roanoke College for a 7:00 pm match.
