No. 11 Generals Advance To ODAC Championship with 2-0 Win over Maroons

LEXINGTON, Va. — The 11th-ranked and top-seeded Washington and Lee field hockey team scored two goals over the final 17 minutes of the contest to earn a 2-0 victory against fourth-seeded Roanoke in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament on Thursday at the W&L Turf Field.

Neither team scored over the first 30 minutes, with the Generals (16-0) taking nine shots compared to seven for the Maroons (11-8). Roanoke did have an opportunity late in the second, earning a penalty corner with 10 seconds on the clock. Senior attacker Emilee Wooten fired a shot that hit the post in the closing moments, but W&L was able to clear the ball to end the period.

Through the first 12 minutes of the third, the ball stayed almost exclusively in the middle of the field until a shot by Roanoke was blocked with 2:07 remaining in the quarter. The Blue and White then went on a counter attack, and junior forward Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./Groton School) forced a Maroons' foul just outside the circle on the right side.

Junior forward Kailey Fitzgerald (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Visitation) quickly restarted play with a pass to senior forward Grace Weise (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin School) at the top of the circle. As Weise sent a pass through multiple Roanoke defenders toward the right post, Tobeason cut in from the right side and deflected the ball into the cage past sophomore goalkeeper Madison Wingerter for her 14th goal of the season.

The lead remained at 1-0 until just under six minutes to go in the final period. Tobeason controlled the ball on a counter attack and fed a pass to junior forward Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./Glenelg) just outside the top of the circle. Muneses weaved through three Roanoke defenders and then had just the goalie in front of her.

Driving toward the right post, Muneses beat the goalkeeper who dove and took out Muneses' legs to award the Generals a penalty stroke. Fitzgerald took the attempt for W&L and scored the final tally of the contest by striking the ball past the keeper on the right side.

Senior goalkeeper Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) earned her seventh shutout of the season, while making three saves. She has now tied her own single-season record, which she previously set in 2019. Amil also extended her W&L career shutouts record to 18.

With her goal, Tobeason moved to 10th on the W&L career points list with 54, and she is now in 10th on the career goals list with 22. The Blue and White led in shots, 14-9, but Roanoke took all four corners in the contest.

Wingerter played all 60 minutes for the Maroons and made eight saves.

The Generals will now host the ODAC Championship on Saturday against third-seeded Lynchburg at 4:30 pm on the W&L Turf Field.
