ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team used a 27-0 run from the second to third quarter to highlight an 83-50 win over Eastern on Saturday in the consolation game of the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament.
The Generals (2-2) gradually built up a 19-13 lead through one quarter of play, as neither side was able to sustain a long scoring run. The Eagles (1-4) opened the second with a three and kept the game within a three-point margin midway through the period. However, the Generals closed the quarter by scoring 24 straight points to go into halftime ahead, 48-21.
The 24-0 run in the second was powered by nine points from sophomore guard
Hanna Malik (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) and five points from senior guard
Megan Horn (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School). In total, W&L outscored Eastern, 29-8, in the second quarter.
Horn opened the third period with a three to cap an overall 27-0 run. Both sides scored 20 points each the rest of the third, leaving W&L ahead by 30 points heading into the final frame. A 12-9 fourth quarter score in favor of W&L pushed the Generals to their final winning margin.
First-year forward
Lauren Achter (Wyckoff, N.J. / Ramapo) paced the W&L offense with a game-high 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, and she added four rebounds. Malik finished with 12 points on four made triples, plus two boards and two dimes. Horn and senior guard
Jordan Diehl (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) both scored 10 points and combined for six rebounds, five assists and five steals.
Eastern sophomore forward Mikayla Wright scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds and junior guard Sara Haas added 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor. First-year forward Taryn Woodson and graduate guard Ashya Gaddy combined for 14 points and both tallied nine rebounds.
The Generals shot 46.9 percent (30-64) from the floor on the night and made 13-of-26 shots from long range. W&L also came away with 19 steals, powered by a career-high six from junior guard
Ana Dorta (Katonah, N.Y./John Jay). The 19 thefts are the most for the program since setting the current program record of 23 on January 5, 2019, against Gallaudet. Additionally, the Generals forced 29 turnovers, the most since forcing 34 in the Gallaudet game.
Eastern was limited to 33.3 percent (17-51) shooting from the floor and made 6-of-15 shots (.400) from long range. The Generals finished with advantages in points off turnovers (38-18), second-chance points (12-9), bench points (29-11), points in the paint (32-18) and fastbreak points (6-0).
W&L will be back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Mary Washington and 5:30 pm.
