Wielechowski, Hoeh lead W&L past Shenandoah, 2-1, in ODAC Quarterfinals

LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior midfielder Grace Wielechowski (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) and senior midfielder Erin Hoeh (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) powered the fourth-seeded Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over fifth-seeded Shenandoah in the ODAC Quarterfinals on Tuesday evening.

Wielechowski scored both goals and Hoeh assisted on both scores, as the Generals improve to 13-2-2 overall with their season-high sixth straight win. The Hornets fall to 9-9-1 overall with the loss.

In the eighth minute of the game, the Generals moved the ball from their defensive third to the attacking third with smooth and precise passing among numerous players. The play ended when Hoeh made a pass from the top of the box back to the right for Wielechowski, who beat the keeper with a right-footed shot for the game's opening tally.

The Hornets tied the game in the 17th minute when sophomore defender Lexi DiSora lobbed a pass into the box, which was then looped into the goal by first-year midfielder Chandler Gallant.

The Generals took the final lead of the game in the 33rd minute coming off a corner kick. Hoeh gathered the cross sent in by senior forward Madeleine Becker (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) and touched a pass into the six-yard box where Wielechowski scored on a one-timer yet again.

Shenandoah looked to tie the game in the 61st minute when first-year forward Saige Musser dribbled into the box on the left side and ripped a shot to the near post. W&L senior Grace Coombs (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews School) was positioned well to make the diving save, before the defense cleared the loose ball from further danger.

Wielechowski took six shots in the game to score her 10th and 11th goals of the season, the most for a Generals player since Megan Engeland '19 scored 12 in 2017. Hoeh tallied five shots and put three attempts on goal, while her eight assists this season now lead the ODAC, and they are the most since Holley Beasley '15 finished the 2014 season with eight helpers.

Sophomore defender Cameron Grainger (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) finished with four shots, including one on goal and one attempt off the crossbar. Coombs (12-2-2) earned the win, as she made one save across 90 minutes of play.

Gallant and senior defender Taylor Morris were the lone Shenandoah players to attempt multiple shots, as both players shot twice. First-year goalkeeper Karissa Dominick (4-5-1) suffered the loss after she allowed two goals and made eight saves in 77:04. First-year Kasie Kilmer played the final 12:56.

W&L owned a 21-7 shot advantage, including a 14-3 margin in the first half, and earned nine corner kicks to two for the Hornets.

The Generals will travel to Virginia Wesleyan on Friday to take on the top-seeded Marlins in the ODAC Semifinals. The game time is yet to be determined.
