LEXINGTON, Va. – A game-high 22 points from sophomore guard
Hanna Malik (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) led the Washington and Lee women's basketball team to its program-record 11th straight home win in a 79-61 victory over Ferrum on Wednesday evening.
The Generals' 11th straight win comes just after setting the previous record of 10, which ended during the 2019-20 season. In total, W&L is now 21-1 over its last 22 home contests.
After a first half where scoring was limited, both teams began to heat up in the third quarter. A three-pointer from Malik pushed the W&L (1-1, 1-0 ODAC) lead to 31-18, then the Panthers (1-3, 0-1 ODAC) went on a 12-4 run to cut their deficit to five points. W&L then led by four points, 47-43, with 2:19 remaining in the third and went on to score the final six points in the frame to take a 53-43 lead into the fourth.
Malik gave the Generals a big boost in the fourth quarter, as she scored 14 of her 22 in the final 10 minutes. The Panthers came only as close as within 10 points in the fourth, as the Generals closed the game on a 12-4 run.
The Generals opened up a 14-5 lead through the first nine minutes of the game, powered by eight points from senior guard
Megan Horn (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School). The quarter closed at 17-10, however, including a deep heave for three from junior guard Aisha Martin at the buzzer.
Both sides struggled to score in the second, but the Generals extended their lead to 28-18 going into the halftime break with an 11-8 second-quarter score.
After a slow start in the first half, Malik went 7-of-8 overall and 6-of-7 from long range in the second half to finish 8-of-14 from the floor 6-of-10 from beyond the arc. Malik is now just the fourth player in program history with multiple games of at least six made triples.
Horn tallied a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double, to go along with two assists and three steals. Senior guard
Kate Groninger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) contributed 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting and senior guard
Jordan Diehl (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) logged nine points and seven boards.
The Panthers were led by junior forward Cameron Hawkins, who scored 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor, in addition to eight rebounds. First-year guard DeMeisha Canada, junior guard Kayla Cabiness and Martin each scored 12 points.
The Generals shot 19-of-39 (.487) in the second half, including 10-of-15 in the fourth quarter, to finish the game at 28-of-72 (.389) from the floor. Ferrum also shot well in the second half, going 14-of-30 (.467) overall to post a 21-of-54 (.389) shooting night. W&L held advantages in points in the paint (38-20), second-chance points (13-8), fastbreak points (13-3) and bench points (16-9) in the game.
The Generals will be back in action on Friday when they take on Catholic at 7:30 pm on the opening night of the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Marymount.
