HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The No. 1 Washington and Lee men's soccer team clinched its 10th consecutive victory in a 2-0 win over Hampden-Sydney on Saturday afternoon.
The Generals improve to 10-0-1 overall on the season and 4-0 in the ODAC, while the 10 straight victories marks just the second time in program history that a team has reached a double-digit win streak. The 2000 team holds the program record at 12 straight wins. The Tigers fall to 4-5-1 overall and 1-3 in conference play with the loss.
Despite playing a scoreless opening half, the Generals pressured the Tigers' defense throughout with 20 total shots and 10 attempts on goal. W&L broke through in the 51st minute on a goal from
Weyimi Agbeyegbe (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) as he found space inside the box and scored for his fourth goal of the season.
The Generals added their second goal in the 68th minute when H-SC failed to clear a corner attempt. Junior defender
Charley Colby (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) reached and tapped the loose ball to junior defender
Tyler Smith (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens & St. Agnes School), who fired a right-footed shot past the keeper for his third goal of the season.
Agbeyegbe and junior midfielder
Samuel Bass (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) paced the W&L offense with five shots and three attempts on goal each. Colby's assist on Smith's goal was his first of the season and the ninth of his career, while senior midfielder
Connor Wharton (Littleton, Colo./Colorado Academy) finished with four shots and two attempts on goal.
Junior goalkeeper
Rye McMillen (Fairfax, Va./The Heights School) (3-0) claimed the win in net, but was not required to make a save across his 90 minutes of play, as the W&L defense allowed just one shot, which was off target.
H-SC sophomore midfielder Devin Kohout was responsible for the team's lone shot in the game, while senior goalkeeper Ian Fitzgerald (1-4-1) made 15 saves in 90 minutes of action.
W&L took 15 shots in the second half to claim a 35-1 edge in total shots for the game. The Generals earned 10 corner kicks and conceded two.
The Generals will return home for their next game, a 7:00 pm matchup against Shenandoah on Wednesday evening.
