W&L Volleyball Secures 3-0 Win at EMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team ended the third set on a 7-2 run on its way to a 3-0 victory at Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday at Yoder Arena.

The Generals (22-5, 11-0 ODAC) won the first two sets, 25-18 and 25-12. The Royals (9-1, 7-3 ODAC) rebounded in the third and led 10-7 after the first 17 rallies. Trailing 13-11 a few points later, the Blue and White tallied back-to-back points, capped on a block by junior outside hitter Maggie McSwain (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster), to knot the score, 13-13.

The score was tied, 18-18, after 10 more points, but then W&L registered five straight points, with three coming from kills by senior middle blocker Katy Blain (West Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School), to assume a 23-18 advantage. EMU won the next two points, but back-to-back errors by the Royals gave the Generals the set, 25-20, and the match, 3-0.

Sophomore outside hitter Sydney Heifner (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) notched a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs. Blain had eight kills on a .500 hitting percentage with two blocks. Senior right side Carson Allsteadt (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) finished the night with eight kills.

Junior defensive specialist Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) tallied nine digs. Junior setter Ashley Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) recorded 26 assists, five digs, three kills and two aces. Senior outside hitter Val Sokolow (Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) totaled five kills, five digs, three blocks and two aces.

EMU sophomore opposite side hitter Paris Hutchinson led all players with 12 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Lizzy Kirkton added 14 digs and nine kills.

With the win, W&L has secured its second straight undefeated season in conference play and will be the league's top seed in next week's tournament.

The Generals next compete at the Emory National Invitational on Friday and Saturday. W&L plays Birmingham-Southern at 1:00 pm on Friday and then Hendrix later in the day at 4:00 pm.
