LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior midfielder
Michael Kutsanzira (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Putnam Science Academy (Conn.)) scored twice in the second half to ignite the No. 1 Washington and Lee men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon.
The win gives the Generals (12-0-2, 7-0-1 ODAC) their 14th straight game without a loss this season, which extends the program record for the longest unbeaten streak to start a season. It is also tied for the second longest overall unbeaten streak in program history over any point in a season.
Kutsanzira broke the scoreless tie in the 50th minute when junior midfielder
Samuel Bass (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) found him in the middle of the box on a pass from the left side. Kutsanzira stopped, reversed to his left and finished with his left foot for his fifth goal of the season.
Kutsanzira and Bass were at it again in the 57th minute. Bass brought the ball up from midfield on the right side, and found Kutsanzira cutting inside the box. Kutsanzira allowed the ball to roll in front of him, before he fired with his right foot and inside the left post for his second goal of the game.
The Generals put the finishing touches on the win in the 89th minute when first-year midfielder
Will Luik (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) found senior midfielder
George Biddle (Del Mar, Calif./Pacific Ridge) on the edge of the six-yard box. Biddle hit a one touch flick of the ball with his left foot for his second goal of the season, sealing the win.
Kutsanzira's brace marked his second two-goal game in the last three contests, and he now has 21 points this season on six goals and nine assists. The two assists for Bass give him six on the season, as he leads the team in both goals (9) and points (24). Luik's assist on Biddle's goal marked Luik's first collegiate point.
First-year
Matt Semcesen (Waxhaw, N.C./Marvin Ridge) (1-0) logged his first career start, win and shutout on the day, as he made two saves, with both coming in the second-half.
R-MC (9-3-3, 4-1-3 ODAC) first-year forward Yoni Ramirez led the team with two shots, while junior defender Elijah Lloyd and junior midfielder Bogue Cummings placed one shot on goal apiece. First-year Adam Braithwaite (8-3-3) played all 90 minutes in goal as well, and made five saves.
W&L finished the game with a 21-8 advantage in shots, including 11-2 in the first half, and earned five corner kicks to two for the Yellow Jackets.
The Generals will return to action on Tuesday at 6:00 pm when they travel to Virginia Wesleyan in their regular season finale.
