HARRISONBURG, Va. – The No. 1-ranked Washington and Lee men's soccer team scored four goals in both halves to cruise to an 8-0 win over Eastern Mennonite in ODAC action on Saturday.
The win improves the Generals' overall record to 11-0-1 on the season, and it is the team's 11th straight win, just one shy of tying the program record set in 2000. The Generals are now 6-0 in conference, while the Royals fall to 1-13 overall and 1-5 in league play.
W&L scored just 32 seconds into the game when first-year midfielder
Weyimi Agbeyegbe (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) found junior midfielder
Samuel Bass (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) for the opening tally. Agbeyegbe then scored in the 20th minute from senior midfielder
Connor Wharton (Littleton, Colo./Colorado Academy), followed by goals in the 28th and 37th minutes from sophomore forward
Adrian Zimmerman (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) and junior midfielder
Victor Ndhlovu (Lusaka, Zambia / Trident College), respectively.
Bass and Agbeyegbe teamed up again on the team's fifth goal in the 58th minute, with Bass scoring, before the final three goals came over the final 8:36. Junior midfielder
Michael Kutsanzira (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Putnam Science Academy (Conn.)) scored the team's sixth and eighth goals in the 82nd and 90th minutes, while Ndhlovu netted his second goal of the day in the 89th minute.
With his two goals, Bass leads the team with nine goals on the season and he is also second in the ODAC in the category. Kutsanzira tallied his team- and ODAC-leading eighth assist of the season which is tied with Jack Horowitz '69 for the fifth-most in a season in program history. Agbeyegbe tallied a season-high four points with his one goal and two assists, as he now has a goal in four straight games and at least one point in five consecutive contests.
Kutsanzira and Zimmerman led the W&L offense with seven shots apiece, with five shots on goal combined, while Bass took four shots and put two attempts on goal. Junior
Rye McMillen (Fairfax, Va./The Heights School) (4-0) and first-year
Matt Semcesen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge) combined for the shutout. McMillen made one save while covering the first half and Semcesen, who made his collegiate debut, covered the second half that saw EMU take two off-target attempts.
EMU first-year midfielder Tony Cortes was responsible for the Royals' lone shot on goal in the game, while two other players tallied one shot each to total three in the game. Senior Ahmed Zaatar (1-13) was in goal for all 90 minutes and made five saves.
The 34 shots in the game for W&L marked the third-most attempts in a game this season. The Generals' defensive unit has allowed just five total shots across the last three games, with less than two shots on goal in each contest.
The Generals will return to the pitch on Wednesday when they host Roanoke at 7:00 pm.
