W&L Men's Lacrosse Downs Mary Washington, 17-6

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Washington and Lee opened the game with a five-goal run and coasted to a 17-6 victory over Mary Washington in men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground Turf Field.
 
The Generals (2-3) needed just one minute to begin the scoring, as senior midfielder Jack Ware (Baltimore, Md. / Towson) found the back of the net unassisted at the 14:00 mark.  Junior attackman Taylor Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) made it 2-0 with a goal off an assist from junior midfielder Ben Mulholland (Sewickley, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) at 10:23, and senior midfielder Thomas Zusi (Chester, N.J. / Pingry School) scored unassisted at 8:38 for a 3-0 lead.  Junior attackman Stuart Greenspon (Aldie, Va. / Episcopal) made it 4-0 with an assisted goal off a feed from senior midfielder Hudson Hamill (Darien, Conn. / Darien) at 7:01 and Witherell scored his second tally off a Greenspon feed at 3:50 to complete the opening run.
 
Sophomore attackman Kevin Cruz scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Kristophe Newman with 2:20 left in the opening quarter to get the Eagles (3-3) on the board.  However, the Generals began the second quarter with goals by senior midfielder Jed Londrey (Richmond, Va. / Collegiate) and Mulholland to push out to a 7-1 lead with 12:23 left in the half.  Each team scored twice for the remainder of the half and W&L carried a 9-3 lead into the break.
 
Mary Washington scored three of the first five goals of the second half to make it an 11-6 game with 30 seconds left in the third period, but Witherell scored off an assist from first-year attack Will Schnorr (Paoli, Pa. / Conestoga) with just seven seconds left to give W&L momentum heading into the final period.
 
The Generals dominated play in the fourth quarter, out-shooting the Eagles 12-3 en route to out-scoring the Eagles 5-0 in the frame.
 
W&L finished with a 43-26 advantage in shots, including a 26-9 margin in the second half.  The Generals also claimed a 30-22 edge in ground balls and won 20-of-27 faceoffs.
 
Witherell tied his career-high with four goals, while Greenspon, Mulholland and sophomore attackman Tommy MacCowatt (New Vernon, N.J. / Delbarton) all had two goals and one assist.  Hamill finished with three assists and junior Jack Taylor (Baltimore, Md. / Saint Paul's) played all 60 minutes in goal, recording 12 saves.
 
Senior midfielder Chase Kapuscienski paced UMW with one goal and one assist.  Four different goalkeepers played for the Eagles and they combined for six saves.
 
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Guilford for a 1:00 pm contest.
