W&L Men's Lacrosse Succumbs to Bullets, 12-11

LEXINGTON, Va. – Ninth-ranked Gettysburg College ended the game with a four-goal run to produce a 12-11 victory over Washington and Lee in men's lacrosse action on Wednesday evening at Wilson Field.

After falling behind 5-1 at the end of the first quarter, the Generals battled back to take the lead with a seven-goal run that spanned the second and third quarters.  W&L (3-4) opened the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal by senior midfielder Jack Ware (Baltimore, Md. / Towson) to take an 11-8 lead with 13:17 remaining.

The Bullets began their game-ending run with 10:23 left in the contest when senior attackman Brian Kolen scored unassisted to make it 11-9.  The W&L defense survived a pair of penalties that sent them down two men with just over five minutes remaining.  W&L killed off the penalty and then worked for a good look on offense by junior midfielder Ben Mulholland (Sewickley, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) that rung off the upper right corner of the post with 3:17 left.  Gettysburg picked up the ground ball and cut it to a one-goal game (11-10) just 43 seconds later on a score by junior attackman Nick Cooper off an assist from first-year midfielder Kyle Howard at the 2:34 mark.

Gettysburg's winning run was aided by the Bullets seizing the final four faceoffs of the game despite going just 8-for-22 at the faceoff X prior to that point.  The Generals went man down again with 1:48 left in the game and Gettysburg senior midfielder Michael McCormick took advantage, scoring the tying goal just 10 seconds later off a feed from junior attackman Jack Fletcher.  After winning the ensuing faceoff, McCormick found the net once again for the game-winner with 47 seconds remaining off an assist from Howard.  The Bullets claimed the final faceoff and ran out the clock for the win.

Fletcher scored twice in the first quarter to stake the Bullets a 4-0 lead.  Junior attackman Stuart Greenspon (Aldie, Va. / Episcopal) notched a pair of first half scores and W&L used goals by junior midfielder Thomas Zusi (Chester, N.J. / Pingry School) and sophomore midfielder Tommy MacCowatt (New Vernon, N.J. / Delbarton) in the final 6:20 of the second quarter to pull within 7-5 at the break.

Ware scored twice in the third quarter and Greenspon added a third tally to stake W&L to a 10-7 lead after the seven-goal spurt.

Gettysburg finished with a 44-40 lead in shots and W&L claimed a 36-29 edge in ground balls.  W&L also won 14-of-26 faceoffs.

Ware led the W&L offense with three goals and one assist, while Greenspon posted three goals.  Zusi and senior attackman Mike Weaver (Lititz, Pa. / Cedar Crest) notched one goal and one assist each.  Junior Jack Taylor (Baltimore, Md. / Saint Paul's) played all 60 minutes in goal and registered 15 saves.

Kolen recorded four goals and McCormick had three goals and two assists.  Cooper and Fletcher chipped in two goals and one assist each.  Sophomore Scott MacMillan logged 10 saves while playing the duration in goal.

Washington and Lee will return to action on Saturday when it hosts Hampden-Sydney for a 2:00 pm contest.
