CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The NCAA has released the 18-man brackets for the 2020 Division III wrestling championship to be held on Friday and Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Three Generals will compete at the national championship event after qualifying at the NCAA Southeast Regional on February 28-29 in Grantham, Pa. Senior 184-pounder
Rexx Hallyburton (Bishop, Ga. / Oconee County) and sophomore 157-pounder
Ryan Luth (Milford, Conn. / Joseph A. Foran) both won their respective weight classes to qualify, while senior 165-pounder
Shane Conners (Mount Airy, Md. / South Carroll) placed third in his weight class. The top three wrestlers in each weight class at the six NCAA regional sites earned qualification for the NCAA National Championship.
Hallyburton will make his second appearance at NCAA nationals after qualifying in 2019 as well. He claims a 30-3 overall record this year and will square off against seventh-seeded Shane Liegel of Loras College in his opening match. A first-year, Liegel is 26-4 and he placed third in the Lower Midwest Regional.
Hallyburton will carry a 72-23 overall record into the tournament. His 72 wins are currently tied for seventh in program history.
Luth is making his first appearance at nationals and he carries a 24-2 overall record into his opening match against senior Cole Erickson of Coe College. Erickson is a two-time All-American at 157 pounds, though he carries just a 9-6 record this year. He earned his berth by also placing third in the Lower Midwest Regional.
In just two seasons, Luth has posted a 46-5 overall record.
Conners will also set foot on the mat at the NCAA National Championship for the first time. He has registered a 23-7 overall mark this year and will open the tournament against the No. 6 seed, senior Dempsey King of RIT. King earned All-America honors as a junior in 2019, placing as the NCAA runner-up at 165 pounds. King earned his bid by winning the 165-pound title in the Mideast Region.
Conners has logged an 80-33 overall record, sitting in a tie for fourth overall on the program's all-time wins list.
Friday's opening session will begin at 11:00 am, with the second session beginning at 5:30 pm. The eight All-Americans in each bracket will be determined by the end of Friday's action.
Saturday's championship semifinals are at 10:00 am and include third-, fifth- and seventh-place matches. The finals are set for 7:00 pm.
