WINCHESTER, Va. — The Washington and Lee men's basketball team opened the second half on a 23-7 run en route to a 77-72 victory at Shenandoah on Wednesday. It marked the seventh straight victory for the Generals (17-4, 9-3 ODAC) and the 12th win in their last 13 games.
The Hornets (6-15, 3-9 ODAC) held a 36-35 lead at intermission and netted the first bucket of the second half to assume a 38-35 advantage with 19:50 on the clock. Starting with a triple by first-year guard
Richie Manigault (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg), one of his six in the game, the Blue and White scored 11 straight points in 2:44 to grab a 46-38 lead.
The margin was down to 48-43 at the 14:35 mark, but the Generals then went a 10-0 spurt, highlighted by eight points from sophomore guard
Mark Lamendola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon), to stretch the lead to 58-43 with 11:07 remaining in the contest.
W&L held a double-digit margin until the final minute of the contest. Shenandoah trimmed the lead to five on a jumper by sophomore guard Alex Horvath with nine seconds in the game. Horvath then came up with an immediate steal on the ensuing in-bounds pass.
Senior guard Chris Oates missed a three-pointer with six seconds left and junior forward
Curtis Mitchell (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) grabbed the rebound, as the Blue and White secured the five-point win.
Manigault led all players with 20 points and eight rebounds. He was 7-of-19 from the field and 6-of-15 from long range. The 15 attempts ties the W&L single-game record for three-point shots in a contest. Bryan Watkins '93 also took 15 threes on January 15, 1992.
All five starters scored in double figures for the Generals. Lamendola totaled 15 points before fouling out. Mitchell notched a double-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Senior guard
Kevin Dennin (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) totaled 12 points, and junior forward
William Brueggeman (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) had 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Blue and White shot just 37.2 percent (29-of-78) from the floor and 19.5 percent (8-of-41) from beyond the arc, but secured 22 offensive rebounds, totaling 23 second-chance points. The Hornets shot 38.3 percent (23-of-60) from the field and 25.0 percent (4-of-16) from long distance.
Sophomore guard Zach Garrett led Shenandoah with 14 points, while sophomore guard Anthony Trammel registered 11 points and eight rebounds.
The Generals have a week off before their next game at Roanoke on Wednesday, February 12, at 7:00 pm.
