Casey's 29 not enough as Generals fall to Guilford in ODAC quarterfinals

SALEM, Va. – Senior guard Taylor Casey (Brentwood, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy) poured in a season-high 29 points, but the second-seeded Washington and Lee women's basketball team saw its season come to an end in the ODAC Tournament quarterfinals in an 84-77 loss to seventh-seeded Guilford on Thursday evening.
 
With the loss, the Generals end the season at 18-8 overall, while the Quakers advance to 16-9 overall and move on the ODAC semifinals.
 
The Quakers jumped out to a 9-0 lead through the first four minutes of the game, before sophomore guard Megan Horn (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School) got the Generals on the board with a jumper. Horn's bucket jumpstarted a 10-6 run to close the quarter, as the Quakers went into the second with a 15-10 lead. 
 
The Generals brought the game back to a two-point deficit by the middle of the second, but Guilford pulled away courtesy of an 11-6 run to end the half. 
 
After a bucket from the Quakers put the Generals down nine to open the third, the Generals used a 9-2 run, fueled by five points from Casey, to get back to within two points. With 5:28 remaining in the period, sophomore guard Kate Groninger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) nailed a three to put W&L ahead, 47-46. The Quakers regained the lead, however, 56-53, before the end of the third.
 
The Generals kept the game within a five-point deficit through the first nine minutes of the final frame, but trailed, 77-71, with 46 seconds to play. W&L quickly pulled back when Casey hit a three on back-to-back possessions, with one Guilford free throw between the shots, to trail just 78-77 with 31 seconds remaining. 
 
However, Guilford held W&L scoreless for the remainder of the game and went 6-for-6 at the foul line after that point. 
 
Casey scored 23 of her 29 points after halftime, going 8-for-12 overall and 5-for-9 from long range in the third and fourth quarters. For the game, Casey's 29 points tied for the second-most-points scored by a General in an ODAC Tournament game. She shot 10-of-20 overall and 7-of-16 from three-point land.
 
Casey finished her career with 1,309 points, the seventh most in program history, and set program records for career three-point percentage (.362) and career free throw percentage (.868).
 
Junior guard Erin Hughes (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft School) tallied 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting in the game, and she added four rebounds and an assist. Horn finished with 16 points on 6-of-10 from the floor, to go along with six rebounds, nine assists (all in the second half) and three blocks. Horn pushed her season assist total to 114 in the game, the seventh most in a single-season in program history. 
 
Five Quakers finished the game in double-figure scoring, led by sophomore guard Lindsay Gauldin, who scored 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting overall in the game. Senior guard Miracle Walters totaled 18 points, while three Guilford players finished with 11 points each.
 
For the game, the Generals shot 46.0 percent (29-63) overall in the game, but were limited to 21.4 percent (3-14) in the first quarter. The Generals made 11 three-point shots to finish the season with 221 triples, extending their program record. The Quakers shot 48.4 percent (31-64) in the game and made 8-of-17 long-range shots.
 
The Quakers held advantages in the game in second-chance points (13-12), bench points (18-5) and points in the paint (42-26).
