No. 8 W&L Women's Lacrosse Cruises to 22-4 Win Over Rhodes

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Junior midfielder Kit McNiff (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and first-year midfielder Christina Cavallo (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens & St. Agnes' School) each scored four goals to lead the eighth-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team to a 22-4 victory over Rhodes on Wednesday in a neutral-site contest at the Harpeth Hall School in Nashville, Tenn.
 
The Generals (2-1) took quick control of the contest, scoring eight of the first nine goals in the opening 17:18 of play. Cavallo tallied the first goal of the game and then McNiff followed with a score at the 25:13 mark.
 
The Lynx (2-2) put its first goal on the board with 23:01 left in the half, but then the Blue and White recorded the next six scores over 10 minutes of play to assume an 8-1 advantage with 12:42 left in the period. Sophomore attacker Katherine Faria (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) had two goals during the spurt, and first-year attacker Allie Schwab (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) registered a goal and an assist. 
 
The margin was 11-3 in favor of W&L with 6:30 left in the half, and then the Generals notched the final three goals of the stanza to take a 14-3 lead into the break. W&L came out of intermission registering the first five goals to extend the lead to 19-3 with 20:52 remaining in the game. Cavallo had two goals during the run and junior attacker Landon Shelley (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) contributed two of her game-high five assists. 
 
Over the last 20 minutes of the game, the Generals outscored Rhodes, 3-1, to reach the game's final score of 22-4. Shelley ended the contest with one goal and five assists for a team-best six points. The five assists were just one off the school record of six, which has been done eight times in program history, including once by Shelley last season. 
 
Besides four goals apiece from McNiff and Cavallo, Faria totaled three goals and two assists. Schwab had two goals and two assists, while senior attacker Dani Murray (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) finished with three goals. Senior attacker Collette Murray (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) added two goals and one assist. In all, the Blue and White had 10 players register at least one goal and six recorded multiple tallies. 
 
Senior goalkeeper Elliot Gilbert (Bedford, N.Y./Deerfield Academy) started for the Generals and made three saves in 39:08. Sophomore Sam Sunar (Montville, N.J./Mountain Lakes) then came in for 10:09 of action and stopped one shot. First-year Chloe Olsen (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) played the final 10:43 and did not record a save. 
 
Senior goalkeeper Lauren Lazure started for Rhodes and gave up 18 goals with nine saves in 37:30. First-year Emma Bradley played the final 22:30, allowing four goals with four saves. 
 
Senior defender Caitlin Anderson (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) had seven draw controls, four ground balls and one caused turnover. She now has 130 draw controls in her career, moving to sixth on the program's all-time list. Junior attacker Alex Meyer (Pelham, N.Y./Hackley School) led the team with three caused turnovers to go with two ground balls and a goal. 
 
The Blue and White dominated in shots, 44-12, and draw controls, 19-9. The Lynx also committed 22 turnovers compared to just eight for W&L. 
 
Sophomore attacker Payton Bennett led Rhodes with two goals on five shots. Sophomore midfielder Izzy Parker had five draw controls and three ground balls, while senior midfielder Madison Rubino added four ground balls and three caused turnovers. 
 
The Generals return to action on Sunday, when they play at fourth-ranked Salisbury at 12:00 pm.
