W&L Men's Lacrosse Handles Washington College, 23-3

LEXINGTON, Va. – The 17th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 6-0 first-quarter lead and cruised to a 23-3 victory over Washington College on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
 
The 20-goal margin of victory was the largest by either team in the 63 games played in the series between the two schools.
 
The Generals (1-2) scored four goals in a span of 2:41 to take a 4-0 lead with 8:10 left in the first quarter.  Junior midfielder Ben Mulholland (Sewickley, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) scored two of the four goals, while junior attackman Stuart Greenspon (Aldie, Va. / Episcopal) notched one goal and one assist across the first four tallies.
 
Senior midfielders Thomas Zusi (Chester, N.J. / Pingry School) and Hudson Hamill (Darien, Conn. / Darien) also found the back of the net before the end of the opening quarter.
 
Washington College (0-2) got on the board with a goal by senior attackman Cody Pascale at the 9:33 mark of the second quarter, making the score 7-1.  Pascale sandwiched another goal around a single tally from W&L junior attackman Taylor Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) to make it 8-2 with 6:51 left in the first half.
 
W&L put the game away in the final 6:16 of the second quarter, scoring seven more goals while allowing just one goal for the Shoremen.  Witherell scored two more goals during the run, while Greenspon had one goal and three assists, giving W&L a 15-3 lead at the break.
 
The Generals substituted freely after the intermission, out-scoring the Shoremen 8-0 in the final 30 minutes en route to the 20-goal final margin.
 
W&L held a 58-28 advantage in shots and a 35-26 edge in ground balls.  The Generals also won 20-of-29 faceoffs.
 
Greenspon totaled a career-best eight points on two goals and a career-high six assists to lead the W&L offense.  Witherell tied a career-high with four goals, also adding one assist.  Zusi also tied a career-high with three goals, while Mulholland finished with two goals and one helper.  Junior Jack Taylor (Baltimore, Md. / Saint Paul's) played the first 45 minutes in goal to earn the win.  He made 11 saves and allowed three goals.  Senior Matt Lanigan (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Oratory Prep) and first-year Warren Seeds (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster) both played in the final quarter, with Lanigan registering one save.
 
Pascale led the Shoremen with two goals and one assist.  Junior Chris Del Rosario played the first 51:32 in goal, recording 12 saves with 21 goals allowed.  Sophomore Ryan Leahy played the final 8:28, posting one save with two goals allowed.
 
Washington and Lee will return to action next Saturday when it travels to 15th-ranked Franklin & Marshall for a 12:00 pm contest.
