FERRUM, Va. — Junior forward
William Brueggeman (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) recorded a career-high 30 points and 10 rebounds, while breaking the W&L single-season three-pointers made record, to lead the Washington and Lee men's basketball team to a 96-85 victory at Ferrum on Saturday.
With the victory, the Generals (20-5, 12-4 ODAC) pushed their season win total to 20 for the first time since the 1988-89 season. The 12 conference wins are also the most in program history.
The Blue and White held a 45-43 lead at intermission, and the margin was still just two (47-45) with 18:17 to go in the game. Junior forward
Curtis Mitchell (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) then dropped in a layup, and senior guard
Kevin Dennin (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) followed with a triple.
Mitchell then made another layup to extend the lead to 54-45 with 16:29 on the clock, and then first-year guard
Sam Wise (Winchester, Va./John Handley) converted on old-fashioned three-point play to stretch the advantage to 57-45 at the 16:14 mark.
First-year forward
Robert DiSibio (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) capped the 13-0 run with a three-pointer off an assist from senior forward
Mark Croughan (Rye, N.Y./Rye) to give the Generals a 15-point spread (60-45) with 15:36 left in the contest. The lead did not drop below double-digits the rest of the game, as W&L coasted to the win.
Brueggeman totaled his career-high 30 points on 9-of-16 from the field, 5-of-10 from downtown and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. He now has 67 triples this season, which is a new W&L single-season program record, breaking the previous mark of 63. Ian McClure '05 and Bryan Watkins '93 previously held the record.
Dennin notched 18 points, while making four three-pointers. He now has 65 this season, which is the second-highest single-season total in W&L history. In the game, the Blue and White went 14-of-38 (36.8 percent) from long range. The team has now made 261 triples this year, breaking the school record of 252 set last season.
Also scoring double-digits for the Generals on Saturday were Wise with 11 points and five rebounds and DiSibio with 10 points and two blocks. Mitchell had eight points, 12 rebounds and four blocks. With the four blocks, Mitchell moved to second on the W&L all-time list with 168 over his three seasons. Rob Smitherman '81 holds the record with 190.
Junior guard Kajuan Madden-McAfee led the Panthers (14-11, 9-7 ODAC) with 19 points and nine rebounds, while senior guard Rashad Reed contributed 18 points.
With one more victory, W&L would reach the 21-win mark for the just the fourth time in 111 seasons of varsity men's basketball.
This concludes the regular season for the Generals. The team earned the third seed in the ODAC tournament and receives a bye to the quarterfinals in Salem on Friday. W&L will face sixth-seeded Lynchburg at 8:00 pm.
