ASHLAND, Va. — Third-ranked Randolph-Macon used a 12-0 run midway through the second half on its way to a 72-50 victory over the Washington and Lee men's basketball team on Saturday at Crenshaw Gymnasium.
The Yellow Jackets (22-1, 14-0) held a 19-17 advantage with 6:45 on the clock in the first half, but then R-MC scored nine straight points to grab a 27-17 lead by the 2:30 mark. Junior guard Buzz Anthony registered seven points during the run, just a portion of the game-high 30 points he totaled over the course of the contest.
The Generals (18-5, 10-4 ODAC) trimmed three points off the margin over the final two minutes, as Randolph-Macon led, 31-24, at the break. W&L was still down seven (64-39) after a three-point play by first-year forward
Robert DiSibio (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) with 13:08 to go in the game, but then the Yellow Jackets went on the 12-0 spurt over four minutes to extend the lead to 19 (58-39). The spread remained double-digits the rest of the way, as Randolph-Macon stayed perfect in the conference.
The R-MC defense turned the Blue and White over 17 times, while the Yellow Jackets had just six turnovers. W&L shot 33.9 percent (19-of-56) from the field and 20.8 percent (5-of-24) from beyond the arc. R-MC was 28-of-65 (43.1 percent) from the floor and 3-of-13 (23.1 percent) from downtown.
First-year guard
Richie Manigault (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) led the Generals with 11 points and five rebounds. Junior forward
Curtis Mitchell (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) recorded nine points, 14 rebounds and three blocks.
Junior forward
William Brueggeman (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) totaled seven points, four assists and three rebounds. With the three blocks, Mitchell moved into a tie for fourth on the W&L single-season blocks list with 59 this year. Norm Kristoff '76 finished the 1974-75 season with 59 blocks.
Anthony notched his 30 points on 12-of-19 from the field and 3-of-6 from long range. He also had seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. First-year forward Miles Mallory added 12 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks.
The loss ended the Generals' eight-game winning streak, dating back to January 15. W&L has still won six straight at home going back to December 28.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday, when they host Eastern Mennonite at 7:00 pm. It is the final home game of the season for the Blue and White.
