LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee men's basketball team used a 16-0 run late in the second half to separate from Bridgewater en route to a 76-62 victory on Wednesday at the Duchossois Tennis Center.
Sophomore guard Liam Caswell converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 10:01 remaining in the second half to pull the Eagles (6-8, 2-3 ODAC) to within two, 52-50. Both teams came up empty on their next two possessions, but then a jumper by first-year guard
Sam Wise (Winchester, Va./John Handley) at the 9:20 mark started what proved to be a game-deciding 16-0 onslaught.
Following Wise's jumper, junior forward
William Brueggeman (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) notched seven straight points to push the Generals (10-3, 2-2 ODAC) in front, 61-50, with 7:32 left in the game. A layup by junior forward
Curtis Mitchell (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) stretched the margin to 13 (63-50) with 6:22 on the clock, and then Brueggeman buried another long-range shot to give the Blue and White a 66-50 advantage.
Senior forward
Mark Croughan (Rye, N.Y./Rye) capped the burst by driving down the center of the lane for a slam dunk to extend the lead to 68-50 with 4:11 left in the contest. Bridgewater shaved just a few points off the margin over the final four minutes, as the Generals pulled out the 14-point win.
Brueggeman led all scorers with 24 points and seven rebounds. He shot 9-of-15 from the floor and 3-of-6 from deep. Mitchell recorded a double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. Sophomore guard
Mark Lamendola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) totaled 11 points, while senior guard
Kevin Dennin (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) contributed eight rebounds and four assists.
The Generals shot 43.9 percent (29-of-66) from the field for the game, elevated by a 56.3 percent (18-of-32) performance in the second half. The Eagles shot just 32.8 percent (21-of-64) from the field in the contest and 52.2 percent (12-of-23) from the foul line.
Junior guard Will Bowser led Bridgewater with 16 points off the bench, while Caswell added 14 points and five rebounds. The Eagles leading scoring heading into the contest, senior forward Davrion Grier, dealt with foul trouble all night and scored 10 points in just 19:40 of play.
The Generals extended their winning streak to five games with the victory and have won eight of nine dating back to November 22. W&L next plays at Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
