EMORY, Va. — The W&L men's basketball team tied the single-game school record for made three-pointers in a 100-87 victory at Emory & Henry on Wednesday. The Generals (15-4, 7-3 ODAC) drained 18-of-40 attempts (45.0 percent) to tie the record originally set in 2017.
W&L held just a 21-20 advantage following a layup by E&H sophomore guard Micah Banks with 11:31 left in the opening half. After a Blue and White timeout, sophomore guard
Mark Lamendola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) buried a three-pointer from the right corner.
The Wasps (4-15, 1-9 ODAC) split a pair of free throws, but Lamendola answered with a layup. First-year guard
Richie Manigault (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) then converted an old-fashioned three-point play to extend the W&L advantage to 29-21 at the 10:21 mark. Junior forward
William Brueggeman (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) capped the 12-1 run with a three-pointer from the left corner to give the Generals an 11-point margin (32-21).
The W&L spread stretched to 15 (49-34) with 2:20 on the clock, but E&H trimmed it to 12, 51-39, by intermission. The Blue and White notched its third-straight hot-shooting first half, making 10-of-19 (52.6 percent) from beyond the arc. The Generals have made at least nine triples in the first period in each of their last three games.
Senior guard
Kevin Dennin (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) started the second half by outscoring the Wasps, 8-2, in the first two minutes to push the W&L lead to 59-41 with 17:56 left in the game. E&H continued to make mini spurts in the final frame, but the Blue and White always answered with a bucket, as the lead never dropped below eight points.
Dennin netted the team's 18th triple with 3:02 on the clock from the right wing to give W&L a 96-81 advantage en route to the 13-point victory. The Generals originally set the three-point record on December 6, 2017, against William Peace. W&L went 18-of-40 from long range that night in the Warner Center.
Six players canned three-pointers against the Wasps, led by Dennin with six. He notched a team-high 25 points on 9-of-14 from the field and 6-of-9 from deep. Manigault registered 19 points (4-of-9 from distance) to go with seven rebounds, and Brueggeman had 17 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Junior forward
Curtis Mitchell (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) finished with 11 points, six rebounds and five assists, and Lamendola totaled five points and five assists.
While the Generals were on fire from beyond the arc, E&H shot just 25.9 percent (7-of-27) from distance. This marks the fifth straight win for W&L and its 10th in its last 11 contests.
Senior guard Colin Molden led the Wasps with 25 points, while Banks totaled 22 points. Sophomore guard Anthony Williams had seven points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Generals return to action on Saturday, when they host Guilford at 2:00 pm. It will be Senior Day for W&L and the team will honor Dennin, forward
Mark Croughan (Rye, N.Y./Rye) and student manager Cade Hornak before the contest.
