W&L Mourns the Death of Gene Corrigan

LEXINGTON, Va. – Former Washington and Lee coach and administrator Gene Corrigan passed away Saturday morning in Charlottesville at the age of 91.

Corrigan first arrived at W&L in 1955, serving as an assistant basketball coach and as the head coach of both soccer and lacrosse.  He led the soccer and lacrosse programs for three seasons each, posting a 16-14-2 (.531) record in soccer and a 16-15 (.516) mark in lacrosse.

He left W&L in 1958 to assume head coaching duties in soccer and lacrosse, and assistant duties in basketball at the University of Virginia, where he also served as sports information director.

Corrigan returned to Washington and Lee in 1969 to serve as the school's director of athletics, a position he held for two years until assuming the same position back at UVA.  Corrigan left Virginia in 1981 to become the director of athletics at the University of Notre Dame, a job he held until becoming commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in 1987.

Corrigan led the ACC for 10 years and he also served as president of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) from 1995-97.

Corrigan's connections to Washington and Lee have continued in recent years, as his grandson, Will, served as an assistant coach for the men's lacrosse program for three seasons before departing for a similar position at Harvard University this past summer.

Corrigan is survived by his wife Lena, children Louise, Kathryn, David, Kevin, Brian, Timothy and Boo, 19 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Details on a memorial service are incomplete at this time.
