MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Sophomore guard
Megan Horn (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School) recorded the first triple-double in program history to lead the Washington and Lee women's basketball team to a 76-62 season-opening win on the road against Pfeiffer on Saturday afternoon.
After holding an 18-16 lead through the first quarter, the Generals (1-0) opened the second on an 10-0 run to quickly increase their lead to 12 points. The run was started by Horn, who nailed a three-point shot, followed by a long outlet pass that ended in an and-one layup and a free throw from sophomore guard

The Generals did not allow a Pfeiffer bucket in the second until 5:54 remaining in the period, and went on to outscore the Falcons (0-1), 8-7, the rest of the quarter to take a 36-23 lead into halftime.
Pfeiffer scored the first four points of the third, but the Generals responded with nine straight points, ballooning their lead to 45-27 at the 6:41 mark. However, the Falcons clawed their way back into the game by closing the period with a 15-7 scoring margin, leaving the Generals' lead at 52-42 heading into the final frame.
The Falcons came as close as seven points on three occasions in the fourth quarter. However, a 9-0 W&L run mid-way through the period, plus a layup and a free throw from senior forward
Andy Smithey (Charlotte, N.C./Saint Mary's School) with 1:40 remaining put the game away, as the Generals outscored Pfeiffer, 24-20, in the final frame.
Horn finished the game with 19 points and career highs in both rebounds (10) and assists (10) to notched the program's first triple-double. She also became the first player to tally double-digit assists in a game since Becca Bolton '12 dished out 12 dimes against Eastern Mennonite on February 24, 2011. Horn also came away with two steals and blocked a career-high three shots.
Senior guard
Taylor Casey (Brentwood, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy) added 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field, with four rebounds and three assists, while Smithey notched 11 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard
Jordan Diehl (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) finished with a game-high 10 rebounds as well for W&L.
For the Falcons, junior forward Mya Johnson was the only player to score in double figures, finishing with a game-best 25 points on 9-of-21 from the field.
All told, the Generals shot 42.3 percent (30-71) from the field and outrebounded Pfeiffer, 53-33. W&L also held advantages in points off turnovers (14-13), second-chance points (9-4), bench points (17-14) and points in the paint (42-20).
The Generals will return to the court next Saturday when they face-off with Christopher Newport at 7:30 pm on the first day of the Bridgewater Tip-Off Tournament.
