Women's Basketball soars over Bridgewater, 83-51

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team won its second straight game by more than 30 points on Thursday night, defeating Bridgewater, 83-51, in ODAC action.

The Generals improve to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in ODAC play with the win, and secure back-to-back 30-point wins for the first time since defeating Illinois Tech and Wells by 37 and 36 points, respectively, during the 2017-18 season. The Eagles fall to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in league play with the loss.

The Generals scored the first nine points of the game, part of an overall 18-2 run over the first 6:28, and held a 22-8 lead through one quarter of play. W&L's offensive production slowed slightly in the second quarter, but the defense kept up its strong play as the team moved ahead, 38-20 heading into halftime.

Over the opening two quarters, the Generals limited the Eagles to just 23.5-percent shooting from the field and also held the rebounding edge, 30-15.

W&L regained its stride in the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles, 25-13, to extend the lead to 63-33 heading into the fourth, before edging Bridgewater, 20-18, in the final frame to yield the final score.

Junior guard Erin Hughes (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft School) scored a game-high 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field, and added six rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Senior guard Taylor Casey (Brentwood, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy) tallied 16 points on 6-of-10 from the floor, including 3-for-5 from beyond the arc, and dished out three dimes.

Sophomore guard Jordan Diehl (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) notched a 10-point, nine-rebound effort, while also recording three assists and a season-high tying three steals. Sophomore guard Megan Horn (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School) continued her strong play, racking up nine points and seven assists.

Bridgewater junior guard Ahlia Moore scored a team-high nine points and added an assist, and sophomore forward Diamond Huskey, first-year guard Jasmyn Pierce and junior forward Claire Mocarski all pulled down five rebounds.

For the game, the Generals shot 48.4 percent (30-62) from the floor, and shot 50 percent or higher in three of the four quarters on the night. W&L connected on 10 three pointers, the second straight game with 10 or more makes from long range, while limiting the Eagles to 25.4 percent (17-67) shooting and 15 percent (3-20) from beyond the arc.

W&L won the rebounding battle, 54-31, marking the second time this season the team grabbed 50 or more rebounds, a feat not accomplished since the 2015-16 team logged four such games. The Generals also held advantages in fast break points (9-6), points off turnovers (23-17), points in the paint (36-20) and second-chance points (14-6).
