W&L Volleyball Defeated by No. 2 Emory, 3-1

ATLANTA, Ga. —  The Washington and Lee volleyball team won the first set over second-ranked Emory, but the Eagles took the next three sets to claim the match, 3-1, on Saturday at the Emory National Invitational.

The Generals (23-9) used a .320 hitting percentage (eight kills on 25 attempts) to win the opening set, 25-16. The Eagles (26-2) then won eight of the first 10 points of the second en route to claiming the set, 25-18.

W&L was down just two (11-9) in the third, but a 5-0 run by Emory proved to be the difference in the set, 25-17. The Eagles then used an 8-1 spurt midway through the fourth to claim the stanza, 25-17, and secure the match.

Junior outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) registered 14 kills on a .400 hitting percentage to pace the Generals. She also had nine digs and five blocks. Junior middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) had five kills and five blocks. She now has 110 blocks this season, which is the 10th-best single-season total in program history.

Junior middle blocker Katy Blain (West Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School) had six kills and four blocks, while first-year defensive specialist Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) totaled 18 digs. She now has 551 digs this season, which is the third-best single-season total in program history.

Junior right side Leah Saunders led the Eagles with 17 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Tara Martin notched 16 kills, and first-year setter Cassie Srb had 50 assists and nine digs.

This concludes the regular season for the Generals. W&L will be the five seed in the ODAC Tournament and play at fourth-seeded Bridgewater on Wednesday with the game time still to be determined. W&L finished in a three-way tie for third in the conference standings, but lost the tiebreaker to fall to the five seed in the tournament.
