BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team was defeated, 72-50, on Saturday afternoon by Gettysburg on the second day of the Bridgewater Tip-Off Tournament.
The loss drops the Generals to 1-2 overall on the season, while the Bullets improve to 2-1 with the win.
After being tied, 13-13, with three minutes to play in the first, the Bullets held a slim 9-7 scoring advantage over the remainder of the opening frame. In the second, Gettysburg's strong defense limited W&L to just six points, while the offense scored 14 to give the Bullets a 36-26 halftime lead.
The Generals found their stride in the third, but Gettysburg continued to pull away, owning a 19-15 advantage in the period. The Bullets' defense went on to shut down the Generals offense again in the fourth, holding W&L to nine points, while scoring 17 of their own to yield the final margin.
Junior guard
Erin Hughes (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft) scored 11 points, pulled down four rebounds, dished out three assists and came away with four steals. Sophomore guard
Kate Groninger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) added 10 points, three rebounds and three steals, while sophomore guard
Megan Horn (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School) scored nine points and tallied three boards.
For the Bullets, senior guard Ashley Gehrin scored a game-high 18 points and recorded eight rebounds. Sophomore center Mackenzie Tinner contributed 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor and added nine rebounds to her line.
W&L shot 16-of-69 (.232) in the game, while the Bullets connected on 25-of-49 (.510) shot attempts. The Generals held a 23-6 margin in points off turnovers, but Gettysburg outscored W&L, 34-16, in points in the paint.
The Generals will be back in action on Tuesday when they play in the first home and ODAC game, a 7:00 pm tip-off against Randolph-Macon.
