Brueggeman & Manigault Lead Generals to 100-82 Win over Pacers

RALEIGH, N.C.. — Junior forward William Brueggeman (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) scored 29 points and first-year guard Richie Manigault (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) added 22 points to lead the Washington and Lee men's basketball team to a 100-82 victory at William Peace on Sunday in the season opener for both teams.

Both sqauds were clicking on offense in the early going with the score tied, 19-19, with 12:56 remaining in the opening half. A hook shot in the paint by junior forward Curtis Mitchell (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) and a deep three-pointer from the left wing by Brueggeman pushed the Generals (1-0) in front, 24-19, just two possessions later.

A triple by Manigault extended the run to 8-0, and then a jumper by Brueggeman with 10:56 on the clock gave the Blue and White a 29-19 advantage. Leading 36-31 with 5:57 left in the half, W&L went on a 15-5 spurt over the next three minutes to push the margin to 15 (51-36) by the 1:46 mark.

During the run, Brueggeman totaled nine points, including a four-point play, and first-year guard Cheick Toure (Silver Spring, Md./Sandy Spring Friends School) added four points. The Generals maintained the sizable lead over the final two minutes of play and took a 54-40 margin into the break.

W&L blitzed the Pacers (0-1), 22-5, in the opening seven minutes of the second half to balloon the advantage to 76-45. WPU worked the lead down over the final 13 minutes of the game, but the Generals held on for the 18-point victory.

Brueggeman tied his career high with the 29 points in 31 minutes. He shot 10-of-16 (62.5 percent) from the floor and 4-of-8 (50.0 percent) from long range. He also had eight rebounds and two blocks.

Manigault went 6-of-12 (50.0 percent) from downtown to total his 22 points. First-year guard Sam Wise (Winchester, Va./John Handley) totaled 11 points, eight assists and three steals off the bench, while sophomore guard Mark Lamendola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) registered 12 points and five rebounds. Mitchell finished with nine points, seven rebounds, two blocks and four assists.
