W&L Men's Basketball Falls at Emory & Henry, 73-71

Box Score

EMORY, Va. — Junior guard Daniel Spencer drained two free throws with 28 seconds left in the game, and senior forward Roy McMillan (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) missed a potential game-tying layup with two seconds on the clock, as Emory & Henry defeated the Washington and Lee men's basketball team, 73-71, on Saturday at the King Center.

The Generals (13-6, 6-4 ODAC) held a 34-31 lead at halftime, and then after a bucket by Spencer brought the score to 34-33, W&L tallied 11 straight points to take a 45-33 advantage. The run started with a three-pointer by McMillan, and then sophomore guard William Brueggeman (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) followed with a triple of his own.

Senior guard Devin Kearns (Cibolo, Texas/Samuel Clemens) stole the ball, and then raced down the floor for a fast-break layup to force a timeout by the Wasps (13-6, 6-4 ODAC). Out of the break, E&H missed a three and Brueggeman answered with another bucket from long range to give the Blue and White the 12-point margin (45-33) with 18:17 left in the contest.

The spread was 10, 54-44, with 14:42 on the clock, but then sophomore guard Tharon Suggs scored eight of the next 10 points to trim the deficit to 56-52 with 12:02 remaining in the game. Back-to-back layups by Spencer and senior forward Alic Wynn tied the score, 56-56, with 11 minutes to go in the contest.

W&L led 68-67 with 4:24 on the clock, and then McMillan split a pair of free throws on back-to-back possessions to push the Blue and White in front, 70-67, with 2:47 remaining in the game. Sophomore forward Curtis Mitchell (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) then also made one of two from the line to extend the lead to 71-67 at the 2:01 mark, but it proved to be the team's final points of the game.

On the next trip down, Spencer made a layup and was fouled. He missed the free throw, but following an offensive rebound, Suggs was fouled and drained both from the stripe to tie the contest, 71-71, with 1:10 on the clock. McMillan missed a layup on the Generals' possession, which set up Spencer's game-winning free throws in the final 30 seconds.

Each team shot around 36 percent from the field, but the Wasps took 12 more shots than the Blue and White due to 15 turnovers for W&L compared to just six for E&H. The Generals ended the game at 73.9 percent (17-23) from the foul line, but missed three of their final six in the second half.

Brueggeman led the team with 24 points, and was a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line. He also grabbed a career-high eight rebounds. McMillan added 19 points and eight rebounds, and Kearns had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Suggs led all players with 26 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Spencer registered 22 points, six rebounds and three steals. Wynn registered a game-high 16 rebounds.

The Generals return to action on Wednesday, when they play at Bridgewater at 7:00 pm.
