LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's soccer team suffered a close 2-1 loss to ODAC foe Bridgewater on a last-second goal on Saturday afternoon.
With the scored tied at 1-1 and time ticking down in regulation, Eagles' (9-1, 3-0 ODAC) sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Davis punted the ball to midfield. From there, sophomore forward Hunter Collier touched the ball ahead to junior midfielder Catherine Haufe who made a run towards the goal. Haufe took one touch to beat the last W&L defender and found herself one-on-one with W&L (4-2-2, 1-1-1 ODAC) first-year keeper Jasmine Furin (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield School). Just before time ran out, Haufe dribbled past Furin, after Furin made a diving attempt at the ball, and finished her shot to give the Eagles the win.
Trailing by a 1-0 score through most of the second half, the Generals put home the equalizer when sophomore forward Sydney von Rosenberg (Boerne, Texas/Boerne-Samuel V. Champion) took a corner kick in the 82nd minute and found senior midfielder Megan Engeland (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) on the back post. For the 31st time in her career, Engeland finished her shot from close range to tie the score.
The Eagles struck first in the contest when, in the 35th minute, first-year forward Emily York dribbled through the W&L defense, keeping control despite several defenders getting a foot on the ball, and scored inside the far post.
The Generals finished with a 24-5 shot advantage in the game, including 13-2 in the second half, and even forced the Bridgewater defense into a pair of defensive saves.
Von Rosenberg led the way on offense with eight shots and put six attempts on goal, with her assist on Engeland's score being her second of the season and third of her career. Engeland was next with six shots in the contest as the senior scored on her only shot on goal. Her 31 goals move her into sole possession of ninth place on the program's all-time goals list, breaking a tie with Katherine Rush '14.
Sophomore defender Erin Hoeh (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) and senior midfielder Danielle Spickard (Valencia, Calif./William S. Hart) were the other two Generals with multiple shots in the game, combining for three attempts on goal.
York finished with a pair of shots for Bridgewater, tied with junior midfielder Sydney Ryan for the most on the team.
Furin (2-1) received her first career loss after facing just five shots in the game. Davis (9-1) earned the win for the Eagles making eight saves in 90 minutes of action.
In addition to winning the shot battle, the Generals took nine corner kick in the match while the Eagles earned three, including a 6-1 W&L margin in the first half.
The Generals will return to the pitch on Wednesday when they travel to Roanoke for an 8:00 pm ODAC showdown.
