Box Score

SALEM, Va. — The third-seeded Washington and Lee men's basketball made the most three-pointers in an ODAC Tournament game in program history en route to an 81-63 victory over sixth-seeded Guilford on Friday in the quarterfinals at the Salem Civic Center.

The Generals (17-9) connected on 14-of-29 triples (48.3 percent) to set the new record, and junior guard Devin Kearns (Cibolo, Texas/Samuel Clemens) also eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau for his career in the contest.

The Blue and White made four three pointers in the opening seven minutes of the game to grab an 18-10 lead. W&L extended the advantage to 16 points (30-14) five minutes later on a three-pointer by junior forward Roy McMillan (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton).

Following a bucket by the Quakers (15-12), the Generals scored five straight points on two free throws by senior guard Nicholas George (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) and a triple by junior guard Alex Starr (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) to push the margin to 35-16 at the 6:47 mark. W&L hit two more three-pointers in the last six minutes, both coming from Kearns, to take a 20-point lead (45-25) into the break.

Guilford came out aggressive in the second half, outscoring the Blue and White, 22-8, in the first seven minutes of the stanza, to trim the deficit to 53-47. The lead was down to five (55-50) at the 10:48 mark, but the Generals made their next four triples over a four-minute span to regain a 15-point advantage (67-52) with 6:58 left in the contest.  W&L led by at least 15 the rest of the game, as the team cruised to the 18-point victory.

Kearns finished with 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting and 4-of-6 from long range. He also added four assists and three rebounds. Kearns now has 1,009 points in his career, and he is the 26th player in program history to reach 1,000 points.

W&L had four other players in double figures besides Kearns. George totaled 15 points, and sophomore guard Kevin Dennin (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) had 14 points off the bench. Senior forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) totaled 13 points and 14 rebounds, and McMillan notched 11 points and a career-high 15 boards.

While the Generals were scorching hot from downtown, Guilford finished the game just 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) from beyond the arc. Junior forward Marcus Curry led all players with 22 points to pace the Quakers, and junior forward Carson Long had 13 points and eight rebounds.

The Blue and White's previous record for three-pointers made in an ODAC Tournament game was 11 set in 2009 in a quarterfinals win against Guilford. This is the second consecutive season the Generals have advanced to the ODAC semifinals.

The 17 victories for W&L this season are the most for the team since 2009-10 squad finished the year 17-10. The last time the Blue and White had more than 17 wins in a season was when the 1988-89 team registered a 20-7 overall record.

The Generals will take on second-seeded Roanoke on Saturday at 8:00 pm in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament.
