Box Score

ATLANTA, Ga. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team held Oglethorpe to a -.029 hitting percentage en route to a 3-0 sweep of the Stormy Petrels on Friday afternoon in a neutral-site contest at the Emory National Invitational.

The Generals (18-9) hit .314 (13 kills, 2 errors on 35 attempts) in the first set, taking the opener with ease, 25-11. W&L then won 10 of the first 13 points of the second on its way to claiming the set, 25-18.

Another strong start in the third put Oglethorpe (6-22) in an early hole, as the Blue and White opened the stanza on a 12-4 spurt. The Stormy Petrels eventually trimmed the deficit to six (18-12), but back-to-back kills by junior outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) and sophomore middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) extended the margin back to eight, 20-12, and the Generals went on to close out the contest in the third, 25-15.

Berry and senior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) each registered a match-high eight kills. Berry totaled her eight kills on a .294 hitting percentage and chipped in a season-high six blocks. Guignon added seven digs and two blocks to her kill total.

Senior outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) tallied a match-high 18 digs, which pushed her career total to 999. With one more dig, she would become the 15th player in program history to reach at least 1,000 digs.

Junior setter Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) notched 28 assists and seven digs, junior outside hitter Allie Case (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) had 15 digs and sophomore outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) recorded seven kills.

The Stormy Petrels ended the match with 17 kills and 20 errors on 104 attempts for their -.029 hitting percentage, while W&L had 39 kills and 18 errors on 108 swings (.194 hitting percentage).

Sophomore outside hitter Jacoby Sims led Oglethorpe with six kills and four digs, while first-year setter Emma Williams had 11 digs, six assists and five kills.

The Generals face Birmingham-Southern later on Friday at 5:00 pm.
