W&L Field Hockey Loses at No. 20 Ursinus, 5-2

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. — The Washington and Lee field hockey team scored the first goal of the contest, but 20th-ranked Ursinus responded with five straight goals en route to a 5-2 victory on Saturday at Snell Field.

Junior forward Lauren Paolano (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) put the first tally on the board just 4:41 into the game. The goal came off a penalty corner. Junior defender Olivia Hewitt (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) inserted the ball, and then Paolano took a shot at the cage. Senior goalkeeper Jules Singer stopped the initial shot, but Paolano stuffed in the rebound to give the Generals (5-7) a 1-0 advantage.

The Bears (9-4) tied the game six minutes later when sophomore midfielder Zia Cooper scored off a rebound into the lower right corner of the cage. Ursinus grabbed a 2-1 lead with 12 minutes left in the opening half on sophomore defender Devon Carroll's eighth goal of the season. Just three minutes later, junior midfielder Erin Saybolt pushed the margin to 3-1 off a penalty corner.

In the first 15 minutes of the second half, the Bears extended the lead to 5-1 to put the game away. Senior forward Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va./St. Catherine's School) tallied the final goal of the contest with 5:50 on the clock with Hewitt picking up the assist.

Paolano now has seven goals on the season, and Tucker has totaled six. With her tally against Ursinus, Tucker now has exactly 100 points in her career on 43 goals and 14 assists. She is just the fourth player in program history to reach 100 career points, and needs six more to tie Jane Beall '06 for third on the W&L all-time list.

Senior goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest School) played the entire game in goal, stopping 12 shots. Singler played 51:08 of the 70 minutes, making eight saves to earn the victory.

The Bears led in shots, 21-14, and had a 14-5 advantage in penalty corners.

The Generals return to action on Wednesday, when they play at Randolph-Macon at 7:30 pm.
