W&L Volleyball Edges Roanoke, 3-2

Box Score

SALEM, Va. — Senior outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) registered a career-high 32 digs, junior outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) totaled a collegiate-best 23 kills and first-year middle blocker Hannah O'Connor (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) tallied nine blocks, as the Washington and Lee volleyball team won at Roanoke, 3-2, on Monday evening.

The Generals (8-8, 5-1 ODAC) trailed, 2-1, after the first three sets, but quickly took control of the fourth by winning 10 of the first 15 points (10-5). W&L then extended its lead to 17-8 en route to claiming the fourth, 25-14.

The Blue and White kept the pressure on the Maroons (7-4, 4-2 ODAC) in the fifth, starting the set on a 7-1 run. During that stretch, Webb and senior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) each had two kills. The Generals pushed their advantage to 10-4, but Roanoke answered with five straight points to pull to within one, 10-9.

In what was one of the longest rallies of the match, a kill by O'Connor stopped the Maroons' run and extended the W&L lead to 11-9. The squads then traded points over the next seven rallies, and the Blue and White secured the match by winning the fifth, 15-12.

Webb needed only 39 attempts with one error to tally her 23 kills for a .564 hitting percentage. She also added six blocks and four digs. Her previous career-high in kills was 18. Cosgrove's 32 digs tied for the sixth-most in a single match in program history. It is also the most digs by a General since the 2008 season.

Along with her nine blocks, O'Connor also had eight kills. The nine blocks are tied for the sixth-most in a single match in W&L history. Sophomore middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) had 10 kills on 20 attempts with two errors for a .400 hitting percentage. She added five digs and three blocks.

Junior setter Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) notched 43 assists and 15 digs. Guignon flirted with a triple-double with 11 kills, 19 digs and six assists.

First-year outside hitter Linsey Bailey led Roanoke with 21 kills and 23 digs, while senior outside hitter Sydney Daniel contributed 16 kills. First-year libero Tori Clinevell had a team-high 27 digs.

The Generals return to action on Wednesday, when they host Emory & Henry at 7:00 pm.
