Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — Roanoke used a 27-4 run in the first 12 minutes of the second half to cruise past the Washington and Lee men's basketball team, 90-54, on Wednesday in the Warner Center.
A three-pointer by sophomore guard Trey Lewis (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) with 15:59 left in the first half brought the Generals (12-6, 7-2 ODAC) to within one (9-8). The Maroons (11-7, 4-5 ODAC) then registered 15 straight points to balloon their lead to 24-8 by the 11:53 mark of the half.
During the spurt, junior guard C.J. Miles notched six points and sophomore guard Joe Mikalauskas registered four. The spread was 14 points with 1:02 on the clock, but two free throws by senior forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) in the final minute trimmed the advantage to 12, 44-32, at halftime.
The Blue and White recorded the first bucket of the second half on a layup by junior guard Alex Starr (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional), but then Roanoke tallied nine straight points to stretch the margin to 53-34 with 17:02 on the clock. Murtha made a layup at the 15:25 mark, but an 18-0 onslaught by the Maroons over the next seven minutes pushed the lead to 71-36 at the 8:06 mark and effectively put the game away.
Murtha registered a double-double to pace the Generals with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard Devin Kearns (Cibolo, Texas/Samuel Clemens) added 11 points and five assists.
With his 14 points, Murtha moved to fourth on the W&L all-time scoring list with 1,669 points, passing Mike Daniel '72, who finished his career with 1,665 points. Mel Cartwright '70 is third all-time with 1,800 points.
Miles led Roanoke with 18 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals. Mikalauskas totaled 17 points on 8-13 shooting.
The Maroons shot 58.1 percent (36-of-62) from the floor and 40.0 percent (10-of-25) from beyond the arc. W&L finished 21-of-61 (34.4 percent) from the field and 6-of-26 (23.1 percent) from long range. The Generals turned the ball over 18 times, while Roanoke had just eight turnovers.
The Blue and White returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts Guilford at 2:00 pm.
