W&L Wrestling Defeats Muhlenberg (27-12) and Ursinus (22-20)

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team knocked off a pair of Centennial Conference opponents on Saturday, including producing its first win over Ursinus since the 2006-07 campaign. The Generals downed Muhlenberg by a score of 27-12 and then posted a 22-20 victory over the Bears in matches contested at Johns Hopkins.

The wins improve W&L to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the Centennial Conference.

In the victory over Ursinus, it all came down to the 285-pound match between senior Matt Kaminer and the Bears' William McGinley.  Kaminer scored a takedown in overtime for a 3-1 win that gave the Generals the team victory.

The Blue & White fell into an early 10-0 hole, but battled back to win the next five weight classes to assume a 19-10 advantage heading into the final three matches.  Junior 141-pounder Zach Bylykbashi (Southington, Conn. / Southington) got things started with a 12-4 major decision over Daniel Bliss and first-year Bryce Crew (St. Mary's, Ga. / Camden County) followed with a pin of Edward Howlette in 2:27 to knot the score at 10-10.

Sophomore Shane Conners (Mount Airy, Md. / South Carroll) produced a hard-fought 6-4 overtime win at 157 pounds and sophomore Alec Horne (Chester Springs, Pa. / Downingtown East) notched a 2-1 win at 165 pounds.  Senior Brandon Lefore (Morgan Hill, Calif. / Ann Sobrato) capped the flurry with a 3-0 win at 174 pounds.

Ursinus posted a win by fall at 184 and a major decision at 197 pounds to snatch the lead back (20-19) heading into the decisive heavyweight bout.

In the earlier win over Muhlenberg, the Generals jumped out to a 21-0 lead and cruised to the victory.  Junior Ethan Hartman (River Edge, N.J. / River Dell Regional), first-year Matt Muller (Roanoke, Va. / Patrick Henry), Bylykbashi, Crew and Conners all won their opening matches to spot the Generals the early advantage.  Lefore added a win at 174 pounds and Kaminer capped off the match with another 3-1 overtime victory.

Bylykbashi, Crew, Conners, Lefore and Kaminer all finished 2-0 on the day for the Generals.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday evening when it hosts Southern Virginia for a dual match at 6:00 pm.  The Generals then host Gettysburg and McDaniel on Saturday for league matches beginning at 12:00 pm.
