W&L Men's Basketball Tops Hampden-Sydney, 70-68

Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. — The Washington and Lee men's basketball went on a 10-2 run in the final 3:19 of the game to pull off a 70-68 victory at Hampden-Sydney on Saturday.

The win broke a 17-game losing streak at Fleet Gymnasium for the Generals (12-6, 7-1 ODAC). The previous Blue and White victory at H-SC was on December 3, 1997.

Junior guard Malik Crute completed an old-fashioned three-point play with 3:32 remaining in the second half to give the Tigers (4-13, 1-7 ODAC) a 66-60 advantage. Junior guard Devin Kearns (Cibolo, Texas/Samuel Clemens) was fouled on the Generals' next trip down the floor, and he sunk both free throws to trim the gap to four (66-62) at the 3:19 mark.

Neither team scored on its next possession, and then senior forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) split a pair at the line to bring W&L to within three, 66-63, with 2:41 to go in the contest. After a steal by junior guard Alex Starr (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional), junior forward Roy McMillan (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) drilled a triple from the right side of the floor to tie the game, 66-66, with 2:07 on the clock.

H-SC came up empty on its third straight possession, and then Kearns was fouled attempting a driving layup on the left side. Kearns sunk the first but missed the second to give the Blue and White a 67-66 edge at the 1:36 mark.

Crute missed a layup on the Tigers' offensive trip, but a charge by Kearns gave the ball back to Hampden-Sydney with 1:12 left in the contest. H-SC again failed to score, and McMillan made it a three-point game (69-66), as he registered a layup with 43 seconds left in the game.

Following a missed three-pointer, senior center Hunter Kuehn secured the rebound for the Tigers and was fouled. He drained both free throws with 27 seconds to go to bring H-SC within one, 69-68. After W&L broke the Tigers' press, Starr was fouled and sent to the line. He missed the first but made the second to push the lead to 70-68 with 18 seconds remaining in the game.

On H-SC's final offensive trip, Crute missed a three-pointer, but the ball went out of bounds off the Generals with four seconds to go. Kuehn took the Tigers' final attempt, but his shot from just outside the right block sailed over the hoop, as W&L pulled out the win.

McMillan led the Blue and White with 21 points, six rebounds and three steals. Kearns had 15 points, six assists and four rebounds, and Murtha totaled 14 points and seven boards.

Crute finished with 19 points on 7-of-14 from the field. Kuehn registered 17 points and nine rebounds, and sophomore guard Kevin Quinn added 11 points.

The Generals made a season-low three (3-of-22, 13.6 percent) three-pointers and shot just 67.7 percent (21-of-31) from the foul line. The Tigers went 6-of-21 (28.6 percent) from long range, but 14-of-17 (82.4 percent) from the free throw line. Each team finished at right around 40.0 percent from the floor.

W&L returns to action on Wednesday, when it hosts Roanoke at 7:00 pm.
