BALTIMORE, Md. — The Washington and Lee wrestling team went 1-1 on Sunday in a tri-match hosted by Johns Hopkins. The Generals fell to the Blue Jays, 25-13, in a Centennial Conference match, and then defeated Penn College Tech, 32-12, in a non-conference contest.
Against JHU, the Blue Jays grabbed a 9-0 lead through the first two matches, but then junior 141-pounder Zach Bylykbashi (Southington, Conn. / Southington) earned a major decision over Lucas Escobar, 18-5, and first-year 149-pounder Bryce Crew (St. Mary's, Ga. / Camden County) registered an 11-4 win against Connor Joyce to make the score 9-7. Johns Hopkins won four of the next five matches to extend their lead to 25-10. Senior 174-pounder Brandon Lefore (Morgan Hill, Calif. / Ann Sobrato) had the lone W&L win during the stretch, notching a 5-1 victory over Miles Gilliam. Senior heavyweight Matt Kaminer (Hewlett, N.Y. / George W. Hewlett) pulled out a 6-1 win in the final bout of the contest.
In the match against Penn College Tech, the Wildcats forfeited three weight classes. For the Blue and White, first-year Matt Muller (Roanoke, Va. / Patrick Henry) pulled out an 11-6 victory over Christian Fox in the 133-pound match. Bylykbaski earned his second win of the day, defeating Joe Swank, 11-5. Junior 157-pounder Michael Dik (Boxford, Mass. / St. John's Prep) edged Chris Bashaw in overtime, 15-13, and Lefore notched a technical fall, 17-0, against Nick Bruce.
W&L is now 4-3 overall and 0-1 in conference competition. The Generals return to action on Saturday when they take on Muhlenberg and Ursinus at Johns Hopkins, starting at 11:00 am.
