W&L Volleyball Stymied by Birmingham Southern, 3-0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team was held to a .037 hitting percentage, as Birmingham Southern defeated the Blue and White, 3-0, at the McAttack Bash.

The Panthers (1-0) took the first set, 25-16, and then won the second and third sets by identical scores of 25-20 to win the match over the Generals (1-1).

W&L totaled just 26 kills on 107 attempts with 22 errors to reach its hitting percentage. BSC claimed a .156 hitting percentage with 34 kills on 122 attempts with 15 errors.

Junior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) led the Blue and White with nine kills. First-year middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) hit .714 with five kills on seven attempts.

Senior defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) led the back row with 14 digs, and sophomore setter Mollie Ray (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) added 13 digs and nine assists.

Sophomore middle blocker Julia Denby led the Panthers with 10 kills, and sophomore outside hitter Milea Ray added nine. Sophomore defensive specialist Caroline Johnson totaled a match-high 21 digs.

The Generals play their final two matches at the Birmingham Southern McAttack Bash on Saturday. W&L faces Sewanee at 11:00 am and Covenant at 2:00 pm.
