Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — Sophomore forward Carson Long drained a three-pointer with 1.1 seconds left in the game to give Guilford a 68-66 victory over the Washington and Lee men's basketball team on Saturday at the Warner Center.
Senior guard Andy Kleinlein (Chesterfield, Mo./Chaminade College Prep) registered the 1,000th point of his career in the contest, but it was not enough to give the Generals (8-13, 4-8 ODAC) a victory. The Quakers (18-3, 11-1 ODAC) held a 49-43 advantage with 12:09 remaining in the second half, but two free throws by junior forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) ignited an 11-3 run to give W&L its first lead.
Following the free throws by Murtha, sophomore guard Devin Kearns (Cibolo, Texas/Samuel Clemens) made a layup to trim the deficit to 49-47 with 9:52 on the clock. Guilford split a pair of free throws, and then at the 9:25 mark, Kleinlein tied the game (50-50) on a triple.
Junior guard Jarrod Rogers made two from the charity stripe, but a layup by Kleinlein evened the game, 52-52. Kearns gave the Blue and White its first lead, 54-52, on a layup with seven minutes on the clock. W&L extended the margin to five (59-54) on a jumper by Murtha at the 5:19 mark, but six straight points over the next two and a half minutes allowed the Quakers to regain a one-point edge, 60-59, with 2:50 left in the contest.
A jumper by Kearns at the 2:28 mark pushed the Generals back in front, 61-60, but senior guard Dominique Henderson answered with a layup (62-61) on the ensuing possession. Sophomore forward Roy McMillan (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) drilled a three in front of the home bench to take a 64-62 advantage for W&L with 1:50 on the clock.
Guilford responded with a triple of its own at the 1:32 mark to grab a 65-64 lead. On the next trip down, Kleinlein drove into the lane and sunk a jumper with 1:06 remaining to put W&L up 66-65. The Quakers missed a layup with 42 seconds to go in the game, and then Kleinlein came up empty on a three-pointer with 23 ticks left on the clock.
On Guilford's final possession, the team swung the ball around the perimeter, looking to find an open shooter. The ball found Long behind the three-point line on the far side of the court, and he drained the triple with 1.1 seconds remaining in the contest to give his team the lead, 68-66. W&L's inbounds pass was stolen at half court, and the Quakers left the Warner Center with the victory.
Kleinlein made two free throws with 15:19 remaining in the first half to become the 25th player in program history to score 1,000 career points. He finished the game 14 points and three assists. Kearns notched 13 points, three rebounds and three steals.
Murtha totaled 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals, while McMillan recorded 13 points, five rebounds and two blocks off the bench. Long and sophomore forward Alston Thompson led Guilford with a game-high 15 points. Henderson and first-year guard P.J. Stephens added 11 points each.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday, when they play at Emory & Henry at 7:00 pm.
