Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Guilford used a 20-5 run in the second quarter to produce a 66-62 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center.
The Generals (11-13, 7-9) started the game with a 12-4 run and led 15-10 with 9:00 left in the second quarter, before the Quakers (21-3, 14-2) used their run to assume a 10-point lead (32-22) at the break. Five different players scored during the spurt for GC, led by five points each from sophomore guard Essence Abraham and junior guard Lauren Ramsey.
The Guilford lead grew to 16 points (40-24) following a jumper by senior forward Anais Weatherly with 6:45 left in the third period. The Quakers maintained a double-digit lead until the Generals made a furious charge that cut it to a one possession game (56-53) with 5:28 left.
Junior forward Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Central Catholic) started the rally by splitting a pair of free throws at the 8:19 mark and junior guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale) handled the rest, scoring nine points herself during the 10-2 run.
Guilford pushed the lead back to eight points (64-56) with 2:49 remaining, but the Blue & White once again made a run to cut it to a one possession contest. Perszyk drilled a jumper at 1:36 and junior forward Ailyn Kelly (Clifton, Va. / Centreville) knocked home a jumper of her own just 25 seconds later to make it a four-point game (64-60) with 1:11 left. Senior guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) recorded a steal on the defensive end and hit a layup on the break to cut the GC lead to just two points (64-62) with 41 seconds left.
W&L fouled Abraham with 16 seconds remaining and she missed both free throws, giving the Generals a chance to win or tie. Kelly's three-pointer from a few steps behind the arc at the top of the key front-rimmed and the Quakers got the rebound and Abraham was fouled with 0.3 seconds left. She hit both free throws to secure Guilford's sixth straight victory.
The Generals finished just 34.3 percent from the field (24-70) and 5-of-28 (.179) from beyond the arc. However, W&L committed just nine turnovers and collected 20 offensive rebounds leading to 14 more shots than the Quakers.
Perszyk returned to the lineup after missing three games and led the Blue & White with 29 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Clifford finished with eight points and six rebounds, while Kelly had seven points and seven boards.
Guilford shot 44.6 percent from the floor (25-56) and was led by Weatherly, who scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds. Senior forward Heaven Walters collected 12 points and six boards, and Abraham had 11 points. Ramsey chipped in 10 markers as well.
Washington and Lee will return to action on Tuesday in the opening round of the ODAC Tournament. The opponent and location of the game are yet to be determined.
