Kleinlein's Buzzer-Beater Gives Generals an 85-82 OT Win at Randolph

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Senior guard Andy Kleinlein (Chesterfield, Mo./Chaminade College Prep) sunk a three-pointer as time expired to give the Washington and Lee men's basketball team an 85-82 overtime victory over Randolph on Wednesday at the RAD Center.

Junior forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) went to the free throw line for two with the Generals (10-14, 6-9 ODAC) trailing by one (82-81) with 33 seconds left in overtime. He made the first to tie the game, but his second came off the side of the rim. The WildCats (7-17, 4-11 ODAC) secured the rebound and attempted to take the final shot.

Junior guard Reid Jacoby drove from the top of the key with eight seconds, but his left-handed layup fell off the front of the rim. Murtha grabbed the rebound with five ticks on the clock and made a quick outlet pass Kleinlein. After pushing the ball up the court, Kleinlein drained a running triple from 30 feet away as the final buzzer went off to send W&L home with the 85-52 victory.

Sophomore guard Devin Kearns (Cibolo, Texas/Samuel Clemens) led the Generals with 21 points on 7-of-11 from the field. Kleinlein also made 7-of-11 attempts from the floor for 19 points. Murtha notched a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Junior guard Ryan Fields led all players with 25 points and 13 rebounds in 43 minutes for Randolph. Jacoby totaled 15 points and six assists. Sophomore forward Nick Goble added 13 points, and first-year guard Brian Smith had 11.

The Generals held a nine-point lead (44-35) at intermission, but Randolph had tied the game, 51-51, by the 14:21 mark. W&L answered with seven straight points to regain the lead, 58-51, but the Wildcats eventually evened the score, 62-62, with six minutes left in the second half.

The teams exchanged baskets over the next six minutes, with Fields making a jumper with 41 seconds on the clock to give Randolph a 74-72 advantage. Kleinlein was fouled on a layup with 20 seconds remaining in the half, and made both free throws to tie the game (74-74). Sophomore guard Drew Hayden missed a three-pointer from the corner with six seconds left, as the contest went to overtime.

It was a one possession game through the first three minutes of the extra period, until a triple by Fields extended the Randolph lead to four, 82-78, with 1:35 remaining in the game. Kleinlein responded on the next possession with a three-pointer of his own to bring W&L to within one (82-81) and set up his end of the game magic.

Both teams were efficient from the field, as W&L made 30-of-62 (48.4 percent) from the floor and Randolph connected on 30-of-58 (51.7 percent) shots. The Blue and White recorded a season-high 12 three-pointers on 28 attempts (42.9 percent).

The Generals play their final game of the regular season on Saturday, when they host Hampden-Sydney at 4:30 pm.
