Gould Sends W&L Volleyball Past Marlins, 3-1, in ODAC Semis

ASHLAND, Va. — First-year outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) registered a season-high 19 kills on a .312 hitting percentage to lead the second-seeded Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-1 win over third-seeded Virginia Wesleyan on Friday in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament at Randolph-Macon.

With the match tied, 1-1, the Generals (24-8) scored seven of the first nine points in the third set to grab a 7-2 advantage. The Marlins (18-10) closed the gap to 11-7, but W&L answered with a 4-0 run to stretch the lead to 14-7. The Blue and White went on to take the third, 25-13.

In the fourth, the Generals held a 22-14 late in the set, but VWU responded with a 7-1 spurt to trim the deficit to 23-20. Sophomore outside hitter Ashleigh Meade (Bristow, Va./Patriot) stopped the run with a kill to put W&L up, 24-21. Following a kill by the Marlins, junior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) ended the match, 25-21, with a kill.

W&L won the first stanza, 25-20, and then Virginia Wesleyan took the second, 25-19.

Gould needed just 48 attempts with four errors to total her 19 kills. She also had four blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) tallied 12 kills on just 26 attempts for a .385 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) recorded 31 assists and six digs. First-year middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) had six blocks.

The Generals had three players with at least 20 digs for the first time this season. Guignon led the team with 22 digs. She also added 12 kills. Junior outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) and senior defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) each totaled 21. With the 21 digs, Volk moved her career total to 1,486, which is now the sixth-highest total in program history. Jennifer Lux '05 is fifth on the list with 1,494.

Senior libero Allison Mackley attempted to keep the Marlins in the match with 38 digs. Junior outside hitter Doneisha Hall had a team-high nine kills.

The Generals will take on top-seeded Randolph-Macon in the ODAC Championship on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
