W&L Volleyball Blanks Lynchburg, 3-0

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team had five players register at least five kills, as the Generals remained unbeaten at home this year with a 3-0 victory over Lynchburg on Wednesday at the Warner Center.

W&L (14-2, 6-0 ODAC) held a 19-13 lead in the opening set, but the Hornets (9-5, 4-3 ODAC) responded with a 7-1 run to even the score at 20-20. With the score tied, 21-21, two points later, the Blue and White notched three straight points on two errors by LC and a kill by first-year middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) to grab a 24-21 advantage.

Following a kill by Lynchburg, first-year outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) gave the Generals a 25-22 victory in the first with a kill. The Hornets took an early lead in the second stanza by tallying six of the first eight points. W&L answered with a 9-5 spurt to knot the set at 11-11.

The two squads remained within two of each other over the next 19 points, with the Generals assuming a 21-20 lead late in the set. From there, the Blue and White rolled off four straight points, capped on a kill by junior outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard), to take the second, 25-20.

W&L made quick work of the Hornets in the third. With the score tied, 8-8, the Generals tallied 12 of the next 14 points, including a stretch of eight straight, to take a 20-10 advantage. The Blue and White closed out the set, 25-11, with a 5-1 run to claim the match.

Sophomore outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) totaled a .357 hitting percentage with six kills, while Gould had a match-high eight kills. Junior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) recorded 11 digs and five kills.

Sophomore outside hitter Ashleigh Meade (Bristow, Va./Patriot) notched six kills on a .312 hitting percentage, and Berry chipped in five kills and four blocks. Senior Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) and sophomore Mollie Ray (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) split the setting duties. West had 14 assists and six digs, while Ray added 11 assists and four digs.

Senior middle blocker Amanda Wrightson led the Hornets with seven kills and one error on 13 attempts for a .462 hitting percentage. Senior defensive specialist Maral Tsolmon had a team-best 11 digs.

The Generals are now a perfect 6-0 at home this season. The team returns to action on Friday, when it plays at 23rd-ranked Johns Hopkins at 7:00 pm.
