VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Virginia Wesleyan used a pair of first half tallies to produce a 3-1 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC women's soccer action on Saturday evening at the Trinder Center.
The Marlins (13-5-1, 9-1) took an early 1-0 lead in the fourth minute when sophomore midfielder Ryan McCurry took a ball played into the box by sophomore forward Alex Davidson and slipped it past W&L (10-5-1, 7-3) sophomore goalkeeper Leeann Passaro (Upper Saddle River, N.J. / The Lawrenceville School).
VWU pushed its lead to 2-0 at the 21:21 mark when first-year forward Mia Meinhardt scored off of an assist from sophomore forward Marli Hayward. The Marlins took the 2-0 lead into intermission.
The game remained 2-0 through much of the second half until Davidson gave the Marlins a 3-0 lead off of an unassisted goal in the 80th minute. Senior midfielder Chandler Wickers (Portola Valley, Calif. / Menlo School) got the Generals on the board 20 seconds later when she headed the ball past the hands of VWU sophomore keeper Alicia Zamora to reach the final margin of 3-1.
