W&L Men's Basketball Dropped by Roanoke, 75-61

Box Score

SALEM, Va. – Roanoke College went 13-of-23 (.565) from beyond the arc in posting a 75-61 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC men's basketball action on Saturday at the Cregger Center.

The Maroons (8-8, 3-5) started the game hot, canning four three-pointers in the opening 6:50 of the game to assume an 18-4 lead at the 13:10 mark.  Sophomore guard C.J. Miles did much of the damage, hitting a pair of triples during the stretch.

W&L (7-10, 3-5) trailed 28-20 following a layup by junior forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) at the 7:00 mark, but Roanoke hit three straight from distance to push out to a 37-20 advantage just two minutes later.

The Generals made a run at the Maroons before the intermission, cutting a 15-point deficit (39-24) to just five points at the half (39-25) with an 11-0 run over the final 3:28.  Sophomore guard Devin Kearns (Cibolo, Texas / Samuel Clemens) started the surge with a three-pointer and Murtha followed with a personal 8-0 run the rest of the way.

Kearns started the second half with a layup at 19:32 and the Generals pulled even at 41-41 with 16:36 left to play on a layup by Murtha.  However, Roanoke responded with a 7-0 run keyed by another Miles triple to assume a 48-41 lead with 14:12 left.  Murtha and sophomore forward Roy McMillan (Raleigh, N.C. / Broughton) both made layups to make it 48-45 with 13:12 remaining, but three consecutive old fashioned three-point plays, including two from Miles, ignited an 11-0 run that gave the Maroons an insurmountable 14-point lead (59-45) as they won going away.

The Generals shot a respectable 47.3 percent (26-55) from the floor and committed just 11 turnovers.  However, the Blue & White made good on just 5-of-23 (.217) from beyond the arc.

Murtha led the way with 19 points and eight rebounds.  He shot 9-of-10 from the floor and grabbed eight rebounds.  Kearns finished with 16 points, four rebounds, three assists and two blocks.  McMillan totaled six points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Roanoke went 27-of-59 (.458) from the floor, with nearly half of their makes coming from behind the three-point line (13).  Miles led the way with 23 points on 5-of-6 from distance, while sophomore forward John Caldwell and junior forward Joey Miller scored 12 points each.  Between the two, they were a combined 6-of-8 from behind the arc.

Washington and Lee will return to action on Wednesday when it hosts Bridgewater for a 7:00 pm contest.
