W&L Women's Basketball Stumbles to Virginia Wesleyan, 63-47

LEXINGTON, Va. – Virginia Wesleyan forced Washington and Lee into 22 turnovers en route to claiming a 63-47 victory over the Generals in ODAC women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.

The two teams traded baskets for much of the first period with neither of the teams able to take a lead larger than four points. A three-pointer from first-year guard Taylor Casey (Brentwood, Tenn. / Franklin Road Academy) with seven seconds left in the first gave the Generals (7-8, 3-4) a 12-11 lead going into the second quarter. The game remained close through the second stanza with the Marlins (10-6, 5-4) taking a two-point lead (23-21) into halftime off a layup by junior guard Raya Berkley.

Virginia Wesleyan used an 8-4 run at the start of the third to take a 31-25 lead with 6:56 remaining. The Generals scored five straight points off of a three from Casey and a layup from junior guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale) to make it 31-30 with 5:43 left in the period. The Blue and White got no closer the remainder of the game with the Marlins closing out the period with a 12-2 run to take a 42-32 advantage in to the final stanza. VWC outscored W&L, 21-15, in the fourth to cruise to the final margin.

W&L shot 32.0 percent (16-54) from the field and 6-of-22 (.273) from behind the arc. Virginia Wesleyan shot 42.9 percent (24-56) from the field and 41.2 percent (7-17) from three-point range.

Perszyk led the Generals with 13 points, while Casey finished the night with nine points. Junior forward Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Central Catholic) had a career-high seven blocks, which ties for fourth in W&L history for blocks in a single game. She also chipped in seven points and eight rebounds.

Junior guard NiAsia Caldwell and senior guard Crystal Strother each had 17 points for the Marlins, while sophomore guard Jayla Harris added 13 points.

The Generals return to action on Saturday when they travel to Bridgewater for a 2:00 pm contest.
