W&L Men's Basketball Stumbles against Randolph, 73-59

LEXINGTON, Va. — Randolph shot 69.0 percent (20-of-29) in the second half on its way to a 73-59 come from behind victory over the Washington and Lee men's basketball team on Saturday at the Warner Center.

The Generals (6-9, 2-4 ODAC) led by 12 points, 33-21, at halftime, and maintained a 12-point lead six minutes into the second stanza. With W&L up 46-34 with 14:03 on the clock, the WildCats (5-10, 2-4 ODAC) went on a 12-2 run to trim the deficit to 48-46 by the 10:32 mark.

The Blue and White pushed the lead back to six on a layup by junior forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) and two free throws by first-year forward Joe Wiencek (Medina, Ohio/Highland). The Generals still held a six-point advantage (55-49) with 8:03 left in the game, but seven straight points by Randolph, including back-to-back layups by junior center Andy Toe, gave the Wildcats their first lead of the game, 56-55.

With 6:01 remaining in the contest, W&L regained a one-point margin (57-56) on a layup by sophomore forward Roy McMillan (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton). In the last six minutes of the game, Randolph outscored the Generals, 17-2, to reach the final score, 73-59. During the run, the Blue and White shot 0-of-4 from the field, 2-of-6 from the foul line and turned the ball over four times.

Junior guard Reid Jacoby controlled the offense for the Wildcats, finishing the night with seven points and 11 assists. Junior guard Ryan Fields recorded 22 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Toe went 8-of-12 from the floor to tally 17 points and five rebounds.

Murtha led the Generals with 14 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Devin Kearns (Cibolo, Texas/Samuel Clemens) and junior guard Michael Hegar (Cary, N.C./GRACE Christian) each had nine points.

W&L shot 37.7 percent (20-of-53) from the floor for the game compared to 53.7 percent (29-of-54) for Randolph. The WildCats also held a 42-26 advantage in points in the paint.

The Generals return to action on Wednesday, when they play at Eastern Mennonite at 7:00 pm.
