W&L Women's Soccer Defeats Roanoke, 1-0

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore midfielder Megan Engeland (Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury) scored in the 70th minute to lift the Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Roanoke on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.

Neither team could crack the others' defense in the first half, as the two teams combined to take just six shots in the opening 45 minutes of play.

Midway through the second stanza, sophomore forward Caroline Peters (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Latin School) dribbled up the sideline and crossed the ball into the center of the box, where Engeland gathered it at her feet and placed the ball in the top left corner, just past Roanoke (2-4-3, 1-1) first-year goalkeeper Chris Martin at 69:22.

With 12 minutes remaining in the second half, play stopped for 45 minutes due to lightning. The Generals (5-3-0, 1-1) controlled much of the game after the delay and held off a few Maroon counter attacks to come away with their first ODAC win of the season.

W&L held a 13-4 shot advantage and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore Maggie Nolan (Flanders, N.J. / Mount Olive) played all 90 minutes for the Generals and had one stop. Martin also played the full 90 minutes and made seven saves for Roanoke.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts Randolph at 12:00 pm.
