Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Claremont-Mudd-Scripps scored the final 21 points of the game to produce a 31-28 victory over the Washington and Lee football team on Saturday evening at Wilson Field.
The Generals (1-2) took a 28-10 lead with 8:57 left in the third quarter when first-year running back Oliver Herndon (Crozet, Va. / Western Albemarle) capped an 8-play, 75-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run.
The Stags (2-0) cut the W&L lead to 28-13 at the 1:31 mark of the third quarter when senior placekicker Matthew Haven booted a 29-yard field goal to finish off a 17-play drive that ate up 7:18 from the third quarter clock.
The Blue & White was shut down on the next two offensive possessions and CMS responded with its second blocked punt of the game to take over on the W&L 45-yardline with 12:46 remaining. Five plays later senior quarterback Trey Reynolds scored on a 9-yard touchdown run to make it a 28-20 game with 10:57 remaining.
W&L moved it 58 yards on the ensuing series, driving the ball to the CMS 19-yardline, before fumbling for the third time in the contest. The Stags recovered on the 17-yardline and drove 83 yards on 10 plays to pull within 28-26 on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Reynolds to junior wide receiver Trey Smith with 2:31 left. The two-point conversion pass from Reynolds to junior wide receiver Nick Wheeler was good, knotting the game at 28-28.
CMS forced W&L into a 3-and-out on the next possession and took over on its own 44-yardline with 1:01 left. The Stags drove to the W&L 17-yardline and Aven booted a 34-yard field goal as time expired to give CMS the come-from-behind win.
W&L jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the opening 18:51 of the game. Senior running backs Marshall Hollerith (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's) and Evan Hinkle (Glen Allen, Va. / Deep Run) both scored on 1-yard touchdown runs and junior running back McKenna Johnston (Jupiter, Fla. / Benjamin School) produced a 20-yard touchdown run for a 21-0 lead at the 11:09 mark of the second quarter. The Generals continued to drive the ball on their final two possessions of the first half, but fumbled twice and Aven kicked a 38-yard field goal with 1:52 left to make it a 21-3 game at the break.
The Stags scored their first touchdown of the game on a blocked punt, as first-year wide receiver Nick Buckstaff picked the ball up at the 8-yardline and rumbled in to make it a 21-10 game with 12:12 left in the third period.
The Blue & White totaled 432 yards of total offense, but 285 of them came in the first half. Senior quarterback Charlie Nelson (Redding, Conn. / St. Luke's) led the way with 109 yards rushing on just 12 carries. He also completed all four of his passes for 42 yards before being limited in the second half due to cramping. Hinkle carried 13 times for 74 yards and one touchdown, and Hollerith gained 65 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries. Sophomore safety Thomas Freeland (Franklin, Tenn. / Ensworth) notched a team-best 10 tackles, while senior cornerback Will Dyson (Indian Springs, Ala. / Briarwood Christian) made three tackles and intercepted three passes. Senior defensive lineman Rhett Delk (Johns Creek, Ga. / Wesleyan School) produced two sacks.
Reynolds completed 25-of-41 passes for 283 yards and one touchdown and rushed for 10 yards and one score to lead the Stags. He was picked off three times. Senior running back Matthew Orehek gained 82 yards on 13 carries and Smith caught six passes for 69 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore linebacker Will Edwards led the CMS defense with 12 tackles.
Washington and Lee has a bye week and will return to action on Friday, September 30 when it hosts Emory & Henry for a 6:30 pm contest.
